Jurema combines a founding story with a cultural project and festival traditions. The town’s history leads to Piancó in Paraíba and a chapel dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Conceição. The Serra dos Caboclos is also part of the local landscape narrative. Together, these themes offer visitors a stay that ranges from the origins of the town to art and regional food culture.

Founding History and Landscape

According to the local founding story, Pedro José de Araújo fled drought in 1840, came from Piancó (Paraíba), and settled among the juremais. According to the account, he built a chapel in Jurema dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Conceição. The settlement was established under the name Jurema, which is associated with the local juremais. The arrival, the chapel’s dedication and the story behind the name are therefore important themes in the town’s oral history.

One founding story places the settlement at the foot of the Serra dos Caboclos. It also describes distant mountain ranges and a blue horizon. This image adds a landscape perspective to the town’s history: in the local account, Jurema is also set against a broad mountain backdrop.

Cultural Activities and Festival Traditions

Another way to experience Jurema is through the “Cultura em Movimento: Arte e educação para o Centro Cultural de Jurema” project. At the Centro Cultural de Jurema, it offers classes in theatre, music, dance and audiovisual media. The project is aimed at children, young people and adults in the municipality of Jurema and gives them access to arts and cultural education. It is scheduled to run until 1 July 2028. Alongside the historical accounts, this contemporary educational project brings together several art forms.

The 2024–2025 arts programmes took place on covered or open-air stages, with sound and lighting equipment provided by the municipal administration. This describes the setting for those programmes; when planning a trip, however, the dates of each edition are what matter.

Jurema celebrates the anniversary of its political emancipation every year on 11 September. The 2025 São João da Jurema included a Matutas Quadrilha festival. It was divided into eleven event areas and reached both the municipal seat and the municipality’s rural area. In 2025, Queimadrilha was described as an Arrasta-pé block held annually by the municipal administration in the Distrito de Santo Antônio das Queimadas; its origins are traced to a Quadrilha Matuta.

A Culinary Note on Pernambuco

There is also a distinctive culinary connection at the broader destination level of Pernambuco: Bolo de rolo is recognised as part of Pernambuco’s cultural and intangible heritage. The cake is made from thin dough spread with melted guava paste and rolled into layers. Its preparation offers a tangible glimpse into Pernambuco’s regional food culture.
