Três Marias: Views, Memorial Sites and Craftsmanship
Accommodation in Três Marias
Três Marias can be experienced from different perspectives: at the reservoir, in a memorial centre and through the community’s cultural traditions. As you plan your trip, you can consider whether the landscape, history or craftsmanship should shape your stay most. These themes can also guide your search for a holiday apartment in Três Marias.
Views of the reservoir and the town
Pedra do Mirante offers a viewpoint overlooking Lago da Represa de Três Marias. Morro do Cruzeiro, by contrast, looks out over Três Marias and the surrounding area; a cross stands on the hill. Together, the two viewpoints offer different perspectives: one of the reservoir, the other of the town and its surroundings. As you plan your trip, you can decide whether you want to focus mainly on the waterside landscape or on views of Três Marias.
The viewpoints give the landscape a distinct character, while the view of the reservoir and the view of the town are not the same subject. This contrast can help you organise your interests for your stay. It provides a simple starting point for exploring the community’s history and cultural themes alongside its landscape.
Memorial sites and cultural heritage
Núcleo Histórico Igreja da Satélite serves as a memorial centre. It preserves inventoried photographs and objects belonging to former residents and workers of Vila da Satélite. The focus is therefore on the people whose lives were connected to the Vila. The building was restored in 2006 and opened to visitors in 2007. Its collection and history make this memorial site a distinct cultural attraction alongside the viewpoints.
Igreja Nossa Senhora das Mercês stands in the district of Andrequicé, in the municipality of Três Marias. It was built in the 18th century and designated a municipal heritage site in 2010. The church houses a collection of images, movable cultural objects and other sacred items. Its history, protected status and collection offer different ways to explore cultural heritage: through the age of the building as well as the objects it preserves.
Storytelling traditions and craftsmanship are also part of Andrequicé’s cultural life. The Grupo de Contadores de Estórias Manuelzão tells local stories inspired by the work of João Guimarães Rosa. The Grupo de Bordadeiras de Andrequicé creates embroideries depicting stories from Guimarães Rosa’s tales on fabric. The embroiderers meet weekly at Casa Venda Museu Memorial Manuelzão, at Avenida João Alexandre 7 in the district of Andrequicé, where they make textile products.
Craftsmanship and local cuisine
Centro de Artesanato offers exhibition and sales spaces, as well as opportunities to take part in workshops on embroidery, recycling and making flowers from PET bottles. Alongside the textile work from Andrequicé, it offers other craft themes to explore. Those interested in design can discover different approaches, from narrative embroidery on fabric to workshops in a range of craft techniques.
Local cuisine is also part of the cultural scene. Festival Gastronômico de Três Marias promotes local cuisine and highlights the importance of fish and Cerrado fruits. Semana Cultural Festa de Manuelzão usually takes place between June and July. If you would like to plan your trip around this cultural event, check the dates for your intended travel period.
Choose the right focus for your trip
When choosing a holiday apartment, you can first decide what kind of stay you want: would you like to focus on views of the reservoir, explore the memorial sites or learn about storytelling and craftsmanship? The themes mentioned range from landscapes and historical collections to cultural activities in Andrequicé.
