Rio Preto Between History, Folklore and Nature
Accommodation in Rio Preto
Rio Preto combines historic sites in the town center with folklore and natural destinations across the municipality. You can shape your stay in different ways: around the town’s history, regional stories or activities in the countryside around Funil. The Feira da Roça also adds its own local character to the town center.
History and Local Life in the Town Center
The Circuito Histórico-Cultural de Rio Preto was established in 2017 to highlight historic sites in the town center. At many of these sites, information panels tell their stories. Many date from the late 17th and early 18th centuries—a broad span of time that gives the center its historic character.
At the Feira da Roça in the town center, agricultural produce and handicrafts are sold. Alongside the historic sites, the market offers a different way to experience Rio Preto from the excursion destinations across the municipality: here, local produce and the town’s history take center stage.
The wider regional context is also part of the picture: Rio Preto is currently part of the Circuito Turístico Serras de Ibitipoca. It was established in 2006 by Brazil’s Ministry of Tourism and the Secretariat for Culture and Tourism of Minas Gerais.
Folklore and Fazenda Heritage
Near Rio Preto is Burro do Ouro, a life-size sculpture made of flat iron. It weighs about 400 kilograms and was created by visual artist Paulo Brito Tavares. Burro do Ouro lies near the legendary Cruz do Negro, another site associated with the folklore of Funil. Cruz do Negro is located on the border between Rio Preto and the municipality of Olaria.
Another destination with historic significance is Fazenda de Santa Clara. Beyond São Luiz, a turnoff leads to Fazenda de Santa Clara, which is considered a regional attraction. Legends and relics from the era of slavery are associated with the main building. Check the current access arrangements before your visit.
Funil: Cave, Waterfalls and Activities
Funil is a locality in the municipality of Rio Preto, offering a range of nature-based activities. Gruta do Funil is a cave with about eight chambers inside. The Ronco do Leão and Ninho da Égua waterfalls are also in Funil. There are opportunities for hiking, rafting and climbing in the surrounding landscape. Numerous waterfalls offer places to unwind; some have tea-colored water.
Other destinations in Funil include a small forest of cambuí trees, which you can visit. This means different types of excursions are available in the locality: caves and waterfalls on the one hand, and forest and outdoor activities on the other. Which ones you choose can help set the pace of your days.
There are natural destinations outside Funil as well. Cachoeira da Água Amarela lies within Mato Limpo in the Serra de São Gabriel. There are hiking trails in the surrounding area, and a grotto at the access point. Nature walks, aquatrekking and nature observation are listed as activities at Cachoeira do Mato Limpo.
Find a Holiday Rental to Suit Your Vacation Pace
When looking for a holiday rental in Rio Preto, it helps to decide first what you want to focus on: would you like your stay to revolve mainly around the historic sites and market in the town center, or would you prefer to include more nature and activity destinations across the municipality? Rio Preto’s center and Funil offer different starting points. If you plan to visit Parque Aquático Durval Avelar, swimming lessons for children and adults are held there on weekdays. Check the current schedule if you intend to take part.
