Prados can be discovered through many different facets: the Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Conceição, a diverse musical tradition and the Serra de São José are all part of it, as are religious and pre-Carnival festivities. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Prados, it helps to consider your personal priorities: Would you like to focus mainly on church art and local history, experience music or make nature the centre of your stay?

Church Art in the Historic Centre

Construction of the Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Conceição began in 1715–1716. On 6 December 1996, the church was listed for protection by IPHAN. Its interior is richly decorated with Rococo-style woodcarvings and paintings. The Matriz therefore offers a tangible way to explore the architectural and art history of Prados: its construction period, protected status and design each tell a different part of its story.

The historic town centre can also be understood through two churches. It lies almost entirely between the Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Conceição and the Capela de Nossa Senhora do Rosário dos Pretos.

Festa de Nossa Senhora da Conceição

The Festa de Nossa Senhora da Conceição in Prados dates back to 1716. It is preceded by a novena. On the feast day, there are processions, a solemn Mass, an early-morning Alvorada and auctions. The celebration thus combines religious customs with several different events. For planning your trip, it is useful to note the timing difference between the preceding novena and the feast day: depending on which part interests you most, a different stage of the celebration will be the main focus.

Music as a Living Tradition

Founded in 1858, the Lira Ceciliana is based in Prados. It maintains a choir, an orchestra, a wind band and a small early childhood music school. It also offers free music lessons, concerts and similar performances in Prados. These activities illustrate different aspects of musical life: making music together in ensembles, early childhood music education and performances.

Since 1977, the Lira Ceciliana has held the Festival de Música de Prados every year. The festival offers free courses and workshops in singing and for string and wind instruments. It therefore includes not only performances but also opportunities to learn music. If you are interested in music, these different formats give you a tangible sense of the role it plays in the cultural life of Prados.

Serra de São José and the Natural Environment

The Serra de São José in Prados lies within the Área de Preservação Ambiental (APA) São José and the state Refúgio Estadual de Vida Silvestre Libélulas da Serra de São José. This refuge also includes the Município de Prados. It serves to preserve regional biodiversity, particularly the dragonfly fauna. Alongside the cultural attractions, there is therefore a clearly defined natural area under protection, whose importance is tied to the preservation of species diversity.

The Passeio à Serra de São José takes place on the second Friday in July. If you are interested in attending, you can use this day of the week as a guide when planning. Another tradition shapes Prados in the days before Carnival: the Boi Mofado then parades through the streets with musicians, revellers, people in masks and children. Children’s participation is explicitly part of the festivities; at the same time, this event is quite distinct from the religious Festa de Nossa Senhora da Conceição.

These events offer a choice of different experiences when deciding when to travel: the novena and feast day of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, the Passeio on a Friday in July or the Boi Mofado before Carnival. Whether you choose church art, music or the natural environment as the focus of your stay, these interests can help shape your decision to visit Prados and choose a suitable holiday apartment.
