Peçanha: Culture, Craftsmanship and Landscape
Accommodation in Peçanha
Peçanha combines local history and traditional crafts with rivers, a protected landscape and views of the Rio Doce Valley. Its varied attractions make it easy to tailor your trip to your interests: explore the municipality’s history, discover Marujada, or make time for the scenery and walks.
Culture, History and Crafts
The Museu Histórico de Peçanha is housed in the main building of the Casa da Cultura; the public library is in the first annex. The museum offers a guided visit about the municipality’s origins and its sociocultural identity. This makes Peçanha’s development a focus of a cultural visit, alongside its buildings and squares.
Peçanha is known as “Terra dos Paneleiros” (Land of the Potters): traditional pottery is made here from clay. The feast day of the patron saint, Santo Antônio, is also tied to a specific cultural tradition. It takes place on June 13 and is associated with the folk performance of Marujada.
The squares and historic buildings reveal different aspects of the town’s cultural heritage. The former Capela do Rosário stood in Praça do Rosário and was associated with the formerly enslaved population during the colonial period. The Pracinha da Igreja Matriz features an architectural ensemble of several listed buildings, including the Igreja Matriz Santo Antônio. The Antigo Fórum on Pracinha do Fórum is another example: the building has neoclassical architecture.
Landscapes, Rivers and Trails
The two rivers have different connections to the area: the Rio Suaçuí Pequeno rises in Peçanha, while the Rio Suaçuí flows through part of the municipality and contributes to the formation of the Rio Doce watershed. The Mirante do Morro do Paneleiro offers another way to connect with the landscape. From this viewpoint, you can see the mountain ranges of the Rio Doce Valley, where Peçanha is located.
Parque Municipal Mãe D’Água is an area of Atlantic Forest vegetation and a landscape protected as cultural heritage. Its surroundings are suitable for relaxing, walking or having a picnic. Another reminder of the area’s landscape is historical: the former Mata do Peçanha covered 80 percent of the municipality. This figure refers to the forest’s former extent.
If you want to include a walk in your travel plans, Circuito Alto da Chapada is an urban ecological walking trail. It begins at Cruzeiro do Alto da Chapada. Along with the viewpoint and the park, this gives you a named trail and a specific starting point to plan around.
Experiences in the Municipality
Cultural and culinary experiences are also available in the municipality of Peçanha. Visits to Quilombo Purificação must be arranged in advance. At Quilombo dos Jorges, a traditional rural restaurant serves deboned traíra. At Quilombo Purificação, Boteco do Toca Amaro offers local cuisine, including cuscuz prepared in a clay pot. A guided visit to Quilombo dos Jorges de Água Branca takes you through the area.
When looking for a vacation rental, you can start by considering what you want your trip to focus on: local history and crafts, scenery and views, or a break at Parque Municipal Mãe D’Água. You can also take your interest in a guided visit or local cuisine into account when planning your trip.
