Passos combines religious tradition and historic sites with art and landscapes. Those interested in a place’s history will find buildings and cultural institutions here with very different connections to the past. The river, lake, waterfall, and city park are also part of the city’s character. You can explore Passos according to whether you want to focus mainly on culture and history during your trip, or include nature as well.

Historic Sites and Cultural Discoveries

The Palácio da Cultura was inaugurated on July 16, 1853. The Capela Nossa Senhora da Penha was built between 1863 and 1864 and was inaugurated and consecrated on September 7, 1867. The two different dates provide a specific timeframe for the history of these buildings. The chapel has a bronze bell decorated with reliefs from the Fundição de Lisboa. The Barão de Passos commissioned it in Portugal in 1878. Details like these draw attention not only to the building but also to its furnishings and their own history.

The history of another building is also connected to a social institution: The house that now accommodates the Escola Municipal Profª Francina de Andrade served as the first home of the Santa Casa de Misericórdia de Passos from 1865 to 1904. The former railway station reopened as Estação Cultura in 1997. It is located on Avenida Estação in the Coimbras neighborhood. The Casa da Cultura stands on Praça do Rosário. It permanently displays 67 paintings from the Acervo Artístico Wagner de Castro. Art lovers can make this a focus of their exploration of Passos.

Another aspect of the city’s culture is the Fonte Luminosa on Praça Geraldo da Silva Maia. It was built in 1951 and features elements of the Art Deco style. Alongside religious and historic buildings, art and design in public spaces can therefore also be part of your visit.

Religious Tradition and Landscape

The Festa do Reinado e da Cavalhada de Passos is an annual religious celebration dating back to around 1835. It offers a distinct way to discover the city’s religious traditions. If you are particularly interested in longstanding celebrations and the cultural history of Passos, this is an important part of the city’s character. The celebration complements the historic sites with a tradition that is not tied to a single building.

Nature and landscape also contribute to the variety of things to explore. The site of Parque Municipal Dr. Emílio Piantino was donated to the municipality to preserve local nature and views of the city. The Rio Grande is one of the natural attractions associated with Passos; the Represa do Peixoto is a lake attraction connected to the city. Cachoeira Mata-Cachorro is located in the rural area of Passos and is one of its waterfall attractions. These varied landscapes give you a reason to decide whether you want to focus your stay more on culture or also explore the river, lake, and countryside.

Passos is part of the Circuito Turístico Nascentes das Gerais e Canastra. Your personal interests can therefore be a helpful starting point when choosing a vacation rental: Would you like to focus mainly on historic sites, art, and religious traditions, or would you also like nature to be part of your trip? These aspects describe different sides of the destination, and you do not have to choose just one.

If you’d like to explore other destinations too, you’ll also find Buenópolis, Santa Maria do Suaçuí, Belo Vale, Belo Oriente, Fronteira, Buritis, Cachoeira de Minas and Espera Feliz here.
