Ouro Branco brings together potato traditions, historic architecture and nature activities at the municipal level. The Matriz de Santo Antônio, Fazenda Carreiras and Festival da Batata represent different cultural connections; hiking trails in Parque Estadual Serra do Ouro Branco and Cachoeira de Itatiaia add opportunities for active pursuits. As you plan your trip, you can decide whether to focus on architectural history, the October festival period or outdoor activities.

Cultural History in Buildings

The first mention of the Matriz de Santo Antônio appears in a marriage certificate dated 1717. Fazenda Carreiras, also known as Casa de Tiradentes, is located in the municipality of Ouro Branco, on the edge of the former Estrada Real. It is an example of 18th-century rural architecture in Minas Gerais and preserves the simplicity of the building style of the time. It has been protected as a heritage site by Iepha since September 2000.

The Igreja de Santo Antônio in Itatiaia offers another perspective: its retable features carvings by Lourenço Rodrigues de Souza from 1792 and 1793. A retable is the decorative structure of an altar; the dates place the carvings in their historical context. In contrast to Fazenda Carreiras’ rural architecture, this carved feature takes center stage in the church.

Hiking Trails and Waterfall

Parque Estadual Serra do Ouro Branco extends across areas in two municipalities. Its self-guided hiking and long-distance trails include Trilha da Canela de Ema, Circuito das Águas and Travessia Topo da Serra / Itatiaia. There are no visitor facilities in the park. Visitors are advised to arrange an appointment; contact the park administration in advance and check the current conditions there.

Cachoeira de Itatiaia is in the district of Itatiaia, is 70 meters high and has natural pools inviting visitors to swim. Access from above is easier via a trail that begins at the edge of the former Estrada Real. A local guide is recommended for the visit. Plan to go during the day and check the conditions locally.

Festival da Batata and Trip Planning

Festival da Batata takes place every year in Ouro Branco during the first half of October. It began during the potato boom, when potatoes were plentiful in the 1980s. This origin gives the festival a direct connection to the town’s potato tradition; its recurring timing provides a useful guide for trip planning. Check the specific festival dates before your trip.

Planning needs differ depending on your focus: for the festival, timing is key; for the park trails, it is advisable to arrange an appointment with the administration; and for the waterfall, plan a daytime visit and consider the recommendation to hire a local guide. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Ouro Branco, you can first choose what you want to focus on—historic buildings, festival season or nature activities—and then set your travel dates.
