Lapinha
Accommodation in Lapinha
In Lapinha, a striking lagoon landscape, mountain trails and thousands-of-years-old rock paintings come together. This makes the area appealing for a variety of holiday experiences: you can spend time by the water, consider a hike to Pico da Lapinha or explore the prehistoric paintings. Which of these experiences is most important to you may also influence what you look for when choosing a holiday apartment in Lapinha.
Lagoons and activities on the water
The Represa da Lapinha consists of two large lagoons. Two mountains separate them, while a water channel connects them. This distinctive layout gives the waterscape its own character: it is not one uniform expanse, but two basins linked to each other.
Activities such as swimming, canoeing, stand-up paddleboarding and boat trips take place at the Represa. The Prainha offers another option for enjoying the water, with the chance to swim in the river. You can make time for these water activities as a focus of your stay, alongside exploring the mountain trails. The first lagoon is about a five-minute walk from the central square in the village of Lapinha.
Hiking at Pico da Lapinha
Pico da Lapinha reaches an elevation of 1,647 metres. The trip there is an ecological hike along trails with a notably diverse mountain flora. Those interested in plants and the mountain landscape will find a different focus here than on a day at the Represa. The elevation refers to the summit; on its own, it does not indicate the hike’s length or duration.
For a longer hike, the Lapinha-Tabuleiro Traverse is another option. It can be completed in two or three days. This timeframe sets the traverse apart from a single trip to Pico: it can be considered a multi-day hiking experience. If you are considering this route, plan your trip as a multi-day outing. The two hiking options suit different travel plans, and neither requires you to choose the other.
The area around Pico is also geographically notable: the mountain is part of the Serra do Breu massif, where the sources of the Rio das Pedras and Parauninha rivers are located. The hike therefore takes you through a landscape also described as the source area of these two rivers.
Rock paintings and respect for the site
The rock paintings of Lapinha are approximately 7,000 years old. They add a cultural and historical dimension to a stay, distinct from the water and hiking activities. Clear rules protect the paintings: removing any part of them, adding new paintings, touching them or photographing them with flash is expressly prohibited. If you visit the site, follow these rules. This protects the paintings and preserves the character of this historical heritage.
Getting there and choosing where to stay
The route to Lapinha da Serra follows an unpaved road. When it rains, road conditions can make traffic slower and more difficult. Keep this in mind when planning your arrival. It is also relevant when choosing your accommodation: consider whether you would like to centre your stay on the waterscape, the hikes or the rock paintings, and factor the road journey into your plans.
