Frutal: Lakes, City History and Living Traditions
Accommodation in Frutal
Frutal brings together a landscape shaped by lakes and greenery with city history and religious traditions. Visitors can choose different focuses for their trip: relaxation and activities at Parque Municipal Leda Campos Borges – Parque dos Lagos, insights into the municipality’s history, or cultural customs with special dates throughout the year. This variety offers ways to decide which experiences you would like to shape your stay.
Lakes, Green Spaces and Time Outdoors
Parque Municipal Leda Campos Borges – Parque dos Lagos is a protected landscape complex with three natural lakes surrounded by green spaces. The complex was designated a protected heritage site under Municipal Decree No. 7633 of April 6, 2009. Facilities for walking, sports activities and relaxation make the park a place with different possibilities: you can include outdoor exercise in your interests, or take a quieter break in green surroundings. When choosing a holiday rental in Frutal, it is helpful to first ask whether your trip will focus mainly on discovering the landscape, culture or local traditions.
City History in the Museum and Urban Landscape
The historic Museu de Frutal was founded on August 16, 2005, and is located in three rooms of the former Paço Municipal, which now houses the Casa da Cultura. The contents of the rooms offer different ways to explore history: in the first room, panels show the city’s founding; objects recall the manor house and slave quarters. The third room, Espaço da Comunicação, is dedicated to the municipality’s subsequent history. The communications-related objects on display there include televisions, radios and cameras. Historical panels and objects from the history of communications are thus presented side by side, without limiting a visit to just one era.
The historic and cultural heritage in the city centre includes the Belvedere Otogamis de Paula, Praça da Matriz and Igreja Matriz. The belvedere is opposite Igreja Matriz; Igreja Nossa Senhora do Carmo at Praça da Matriz is considered a landmark and an outstanding attraction in the city. An image of Nossa Senhora do Carmo from the church is also part of the protected cultural heritage: it is kept in the reception area of Casa Paroquial and protected under Decrees No. 6.600/2005 and No. 21/2006. The art panels by Bassano Vaccarini are also protected as historical and cultural heritage. They adorned Cine Canaã, which opened in 1958 and was then known for its 750 leather seats and modern facilities; it was established on the initiative of Otogamiz de Paula.
Religious Traditions and Cultural Identity
Frutal’s popular religious culture includes groups with different traditions. The de Marujo group “José Albino da Silva” was recognized as intangible cultural heritage of Frutal on March 8, 2019. Its annual activities in May celebrate the abolition of slavery; in November, the group takes part in Black Consciousness Day celebrations. Companhia de Santos Reis “Estrela da Guia” has been recognized as intangible cultural heritage since November 28, 2016. It has existed for more than 50 years, preserves the traditions of Folias de Reis and has had legal personality since 2010. Together, these examples show that cultural discoveries in Frutal are not limited to buildings.
Another special experience is the Romaria à Água Santa. The pilgrimage takes place every year on October 12, honours Nossa Senhora Aparecida and dates back to 1961. Pilgrims from Minas Gerais, Goiás and São Paulo cover the 24 kilometres between Frutal and Água Santa as an expression of their faith. The Romaria is spontaneous and independent of government authorities or religious institutions. The fixed date and route length are useful points of reference if you would like to take this tradition into account when planning your trip; by themselves, they do not indicate how long the journey takes.
Capoeira is also a cultural, historical and social tradition in Frutal. It is represented by the groups Raça Negra and Quanza, as well as the Associação Cultural UniAfro Brasil, which preserve the municipality’s memory and identity. The cultural themes therefore range from religious customs to a tradition explicitly connected with local history and identity. Depending on which of these themes interests you most, you can choose the focus of your trip and a suitable holiday rental according to your own travel plans.
