Waterfalls and natural pools, protected historic sites and lively markets define Esmeraldas. The city combines nature experiences with glimpses into its history and local everyday life. If you’re looking for a vacation rental for your stay, you can consider whether landscapes, culture or the market scene will shape your travel plans most.

Nature around Esmeraldas

Cachoeira Serra Negra is a natural attraction in the Serra Negra region. Waterfalls and natural pools lie along its course, making it a place to take in the scenery and relax. This gives the nature experience its own rhythm: the pools are as much a part of the place’s character as the sight of the water. If you’d like to connect with nature during your time in Esmeraldas, the cachoeira is a specific place to focus on.

Serra Teotônia offers a different landscape experience. A roughly 3-kilometer trail leads to its highest point. The Passeio da Serra Teotônia is also held every year. Participants explore the trail, take in the landscape and spend time together in nature. The trail and the annual event offer different emphases: one focuses on the route to the highest point, while the other is about enjoying nature together.

For a view over the city, Mirante do Cristo de Esmeraldas is located in a central area on elevated ground. From there, the panorama stretches across Esmeraldas and the mountains of the surrounding landscape. The viewpoint thus complements nature experiences outside the center with views of the city and its surroundings.

History and architecture

Casarão Santo Antônio was built between 1818 and 1822. The building, or complex, of Fazenda Santo Antônio is protected by the Esmeraldas city administration and the Instituto Estadual do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico de Minas Gerais (IEPHA-MG). Conjunto Histórico e Paisagístico da Fazenda da Serra Negra is also protected as tangible cultural heritage of cultural significance to Esmeraldas and is part of the tourist Circuito Verde-Trilha dos Bandeirantes. These sites give the trip a historical and cultural focus, distinct from the nature experience at Cachoeira Serra Negra.

In the center, Igreja Matriz de Santa Quitéria stands at Praça Getúlio Vargas. Built in 1957, the church features modernist architectural elements inspired by the works of architect Oscar Niemeyer. Another historical connection is the Caminho de Santa Quitéria, which links Betim and Esmeraldas.

Markets and local traditions

The Feira Gastronômica de Esmeraldas is held every Friday from 5 p.m. at Praça da Feira, on Praça Getúlio Vargas in the center. It offers typical dishes, snacks, handmade foods, sweets and drinks. There are also small food stalls and a variety of specialties prepared by local vendors. Friday evening is therefore a clear point of reference for planning if you’d like to get to know Esmeraldas through its food and market.

The Feira Livre de Esmeraldas takes place on Saturday mornings at the same Praça da Feira. It brings together agricultural producers, artisans, merchants and local entrepreneurs. The two markets differ in focus: the Feira Gastronômica highlights prepared foods and specialties, while the Feira Livre brings together a range of local participants. Along with the centrally located church at Praça Getúlio Vargas, they provide a cultural and everyday-life focal point in the city center.

An annual event of particular importance to the city is the Festa do Município de Esmeraldas on September 16. It commemorates Esmeraldas’ political and administrative emancipation and includes cultural performances, artistic presentations, traditional forms of expression and activities for the whole family. If you’d like to plan your trip around this event, be sure to include the date in your plans.
