Churches, the Estrada Real and local history
Cristiano Otoni’s history is reflected in several buildings. Nossa Senhora da Guia was the municipality’s first patron saint. The Capela de Nossa Senhora da Guia was built in the 1940s and completed in 1947. In Engenho Velho stands the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Conceição, a 19th-century building on the Estrada Real route. The Caminho Novo of the Estrada Real runs in front of the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Conceição. The Igreja de São Caetano in the district of São Caetano also dates from the 19th century.
Another historic destination is the Estação Ferroviária de Cristiano Otoni. Its building was constructed in 1892, and the station is protected as municipal historical and cultural heritage. The municipality is also home to a Fazenda built by enslaved people on a rock. It preserves a Senzala and other historical remains. These places offer different ways to explore the past through religious buildings, railway heritage, and the memory of slavery and forced labor.
An annual festival in June
The Festa de Santo Antônio takes place every year on the days leading up to June 13 and on June 13 itself. The festivities include shows, market stalls and Quadrilhas. For families who want to plan their stay around a specific occasion, this recurring date provides a useful reference. It differs from the nature and history destinations, which are not tied to an annual event date.
