Araçuaí: Culture, Architecture and Railway History
Accommodation in Araçuaí
Araçuaí brings together cultural history, distinctive buildings and railway connections. The Museu de Araçuaí focuses on subjects such as religious life, customs and crafts. Other highlights include a historic market, protected buildings and different route options. This gives you a choice of themes when planning your trip: collections and history, architectural heritage or a cycling route.
Museum and regional cultural history
The collection at the Museu de Araçuaí includes objects and documents relating to religious life, customs and traditions, and crafts connected with the history of Araçuaí and the Jequitinhonha Valley. Lira Marques and Frei Xico assembled the collection over the past fifty years. Bringing together objects, documents and a range of subjects, the museum offers a tangible starting point for exploring the area's cultural history. Its focus ranges from religious connections to craft traditions and ways of life.
The Mercado Municipal de Araçuaí offers another cultural and architectural perspective. This historic building of architectural significance is also a cultural and tourist center for the region. Alongside the museum collection, the market building is a focal point, with importance linked both to its architectural history and to its regional role.
Architectural heritage and protected sites
The Conjunto Arquitetônico da Matriz de Santo Antônio is listed as a protected architectural ensemble under D. 107/2019. It is located at Praça Franklin Resende 243 in the center of Araçuaí. The Igreja Senhor da Boa Vida is listed as a protected cultural asset under D. 127/2020. The Antigo Casarão da Família Cunha Melo is another historic mansion: it is located at Rua Pernambuco 115 and is listed as a protected cultural asset under Lei 006/1999. The Coreto da Praça Getúlio Vargas is also listed as a protected cultural asset, under D. 114/2014.
Together, these buildings represent different forms of architectural heritage: an architectural ensemble, a church, a mansion and a coreto, or bandstand. If you are particularly interested in architecture and history, these different building types offer a broad range of themes to explore. Alongside the Mercado Municipal and the museum collection, they create a cultural experience that is not limited to a single building.
Railway connections and routes
The Araçuaí–Novo Cruzeiro section of the Rota Bahia-Minas is 95 km long and passes the stations and settlements of Alfredo Graça, Engenheiro Schnoor and Queixada. The Rota de Cicloturismo is a separate route, starting at Estação Arassuai in Araçuaí. The former EFBM station was inaugurated in 1942 and is particularly well suited to photography. The route information therefore reflects different aspects of trip planning: one describes a 95 km section with several stations and settlements, while the other starts at the former railway station.
Plan your visit and choose accommodation
The Museu de Araçuaí is open for visits Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Weekend visits are available by appointment only. Check visiting hours and appointment requirements before your trip.
When looking for a holiday rental in Araçuaí, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your stay. Would you like to explore the museum collection and regional cultural history, focus on the buildings or include the Rota de Cicloturismo? These themes offer different ways to plan your trip. Then choose accommodation to suit your own daily itinerary.
