Caucaia: History, Culture and Coast
Accommodation in Caucaia
Caucaia offers different perspectives for planning a trip: historic church history, Tapeba culture, and natural and coastal landscapes within the municipality. Whether you want to focus your trip more on culture, kitesurfing or protected landscapes also makes a difference when choosing the right base.
Church History and Tapeba Culture
The Igreja de Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres, also known as the Igreja Matriz de Caucaia, is a historic and cultural landmark. A two-tiered platform separates the church from the square. It was completed in 1749 and is among Caucaia’s first colonial-era buildings. The platform gives the building a distinctive relationship with the square; for those interested in culture, this concrete architectural detail connects with Caucaia’s early history.
Reports from October 2022 describe various elements of the Jogos Indígenas do Povo Tapeba and the Festa da Carnaúba. The Jogos featured competitions in duathlon, breath-holding, archery and javelin throwing. The Feira Cultural at the Festa da Carnaúba included both the sale of items made by Indigenous people and a handicraft workshop where such items were produced. At the Festa, the Feira Cultural and the Jogos, attendees also performed a sacred Tapeba ritual of purification and marriage.
Cultural performances at the Festa da Carnaúba included performances by Indigenous schools: Marcelino Alves de Mato, Tapeba do Capuan, Tapeba do Trilho, Tapeba Capoeira Narciso Ferreira Matos, Vila dos Cacos, Maria Silva, Amélia Domingos, Conrado Teixeira, Aba Tapeba and Anama Tapeba. Caucaia’s municipal profile lists the Festa as one of the city’s most important cultural events and gives its dates as October 18–20. Check the program for the relevant year before travelling.
Coast and Activities Within the Municipality
Praia do Cumbuco, within the municipality of Caucaia, offers opportunities for kitesurfing. The city describes the beach as one of the world’s best places for the sport; surfing is also among the activities mentioned. Conditions vary by season. Cumbuco’s natural landscape includes lagoons, rivers and dunes. It is the only beach in the state of Ceará to have received the Blue Flag; check the certification status for the relevant travel season.
Lagoa do Cauípe is among Caucaia’s prominent postcard views and is used for freestyle kitesurfing. Wind and water conditions can vary. Lagamar do Cauípe tells a different story of the landscape: it formed when shifting dunes in the surrounding dune field dammed the Rio Cauípe. Here, too, water and dunes are directly connected, but in a different way than in the sporting view of the lagoon.
The Observatório do Mar is also located on Cumbuco Beach. The facility has exhibition areas and a classroom for educational activities that raise awareness about protecting coastal ecosystems. Environmental education and the coastal landscape thus complement sporting opportunities as other themes to explore during a stay in this part of the municipality.
Natural Areas and Getting Around
Caucaia is home to the Parque Estadual Botânico do Ceará, a fully protected conservation area dedicated to environmental protection and education. Its trails extend for six kilometres. Public visitor facilities include an environmental museum, a xylotheque, a meliponary, an orchid house, a library and a medicinal plant garden. In addition to beaches and water sports, the region also offers trails and a range of facilities focused on nature and environmental education.
The Rio Ceará crosses most of Caucaia, flowing from southwest to northeast, and is approximately 50 kilometres long. Part of Caucaia’s 44-kilometre coastline lies within the Área de Proteção Ambiental do Rio Cauípe. These landscapes and protected areas offer a different direction for trip planning than the historic church or water sports.
For travelling to Caucaia, the CE-085 is one of the main roads, alongside the BR-020 and other secondary roads. Check road conditions before setting out. When looking for a holiday apartment in Caucaia, it can help to first decide which interests matter most to your travel group: should the trip focus mainly on church history, coastal activities, or nature and environmental themes? The verified sights and landscapes offer distinct options to help you decide.
