Jedey: Hiking Trails, Nature and Cheese

A route runs through Jedey that is also known as the Camino Real de la Costa y Medianías. The Paisaje Protegido de Tamanca is designated both as a protected landscape within the Canary Islands network of protected natural areas and as a Special Area of Conservation in the Natura 2000 network.

Trails

On the GR-130, Stage 6 follows Las Manchas in the direction of Jedey. The track of the Camino de Tamanca runs parallel to the LP-2 towards Jedey; the agricultural track to Las Manchas connects with this route. After Jedey, at 580 metres above sea level, the trail turns right onto a track. Stage 6 of the Camino Natural de la Palma, which leads towards Jedey, is almost 22 kilometres long.

From Jedey, the PR LP 15 via Llano de las Brujas can be combined with the GR 131 towards Fuencaliente. A circular route combining the GR 130 and PR LP 15 can begin in Jedey; it involves 11 hours and 30 minutes of walking and can be completed in two days at a leisurely pace. For the PR LP 15 Tigalate–Jedey, the estimated walking time for the outward journey is 5 hours and 30 minutes. The different route lengths and walking times help distinguish shorter trail sections from extended hikes.

Landscape and Nature

After the village, the track to Jedey passes through the Paisaje Protegido de Tamanca. In the section opened up by the route, endemic plants such as tabaibale, retama and vinagrera (Euphorbia lamarckii, Retama rhodorhizoides and Rumex lunaria) grow. The Tamanca section includes vineyards and land used for agriculture.

The trail climbs about 4 kilometres to 800 metres above sea level before entering a pine forest. The Paisaje Protegido de Tamanca includes historic lava flows from the 1712 eruption of El Charco and the 1949 eruption of San Juan volcano.

For the PR LP 15, the Parque Natural de Cumbre Vieja and the Paisaje Protegido de Tamanca are designated protected natural areas. Observing flora and fauna is one of the possible activities in the Paisaje Protegido de Tamanca. La Palma giant lizards (Gallotia auaritae) and bluish Tizón lizards (Gallotia galloti palmae) are frequently found in the Tamanca section.

Connections

The Paisaje Protegido de Tamanca can be reached by car via the southern LP-2 road. A bus route connects Jedey and Tigalate in both directions.

Local Character

The Quesería El Manchón farm has 170 Palmera goats, and El Jedey cheese is produced there. Quesería El Manchón is located 3 kilometres south of Jedey. At Quesería El Manchón, the goats are milked daily after the cheese is made and taken to graze in the surrounding area.
