Discover Murom: the Oka, monasteries and traditions
Accommodation in Murom
The Oka, the city’s history and a distinctive landmark
Murom combines riverside scenery, religious heritage and the story of Ilya Muromets. In Okskiy Park, a viewing platform offers views of the Oka and its banks. The same park is home to a monument to the legendary hero Ilya Muromets, which stands 21 metres high, including its pedestal. A broad view of the river and a striking cultural landmark come together here, offering two different ways to begin exploring the city.
The road cable-stayed bridge over the Oka, opened in 2009, also shapes Murom’s relationship with the river. It connects the Vladimir and Nizhny Novgorod regions. The historical detail of its opening year and the link between the two regions offer a different perspective from the park’s viewing platform: here, the focus is on the regional connection across the river.
Monasteries, architecture and a museum
The men’s Blagoveshchensky muzhskoy monastyr has reopened. Services are held there and restoration work is underway. Its most important relics include those of Prince Konstantin, Princess Irina and their sons Mikhail and Feodor. As operations may change, check the current arrangements before visiting. The Svyato-Troitsky zhensky monastyr is an active women’s monastery and houses the relics of Saints Peter and Fevronia. Both places bring contemporary monastic life together with a religious tradition embodied in the venerated relics.
One architectural highlight is the stone Svyato-Troitsky sobor, which has survived to this day. It was built in the Russian Uzorochye style and adorned with gilded wrought-iron crosses and glazed tiles. This building brings together a named architectural style and carefully described decorative details, making it an appealing focal point for anyone interested in historic architecture.
The Murom Historical and Art Museum (Muromsky istoriko-khudozhestvenny muzey) displays paintings, graphic art, furniture and porcelain from the collection of Count Alexei Uvarov and his wife, Praskovya Uvarova, in its art gallery. The museum also offers walking tours of the city, as well as tours using transport provided by the customer. If you choose a tour by vehicle, you must therefore provide it yourself as the customer. A walking tour and a visit to the art gallery offer different focuses: you can explore Murom’s cityscape or spend time with the collection.
Hands-on activities and festival dates
At «Khlebnaya gornitsa», visitors can take part in workshops, bake a kalach or decorate gingerbread. Advance booking is required for programmes and excursions. If you would like to include these activities in your plans, allow enough time to book when choosing your dates.
The annual tourism festival «Bogatyrskoye razdolye», held in Murom, is part of the regional festival «Bogatyrskiye zabavy». Participants are immersed in an ethnographic portrayal of Ilya Muromets’ era and learn how people in this portrayal lived, ate, drank, celebrated and competed. The festival is therefore about more than Ilya Muromets himself: it also explores different aspects of the way of life depicted.
On 8 July, Family, Love and Fidelity Day, family-oriented celebrations take place in Murom. If this date works for your trip, check in advance which specific events are planned for your visit. For choosing accommodation, this suggests a practical approach: first decide whether you’d like to experience Murom mainly through its monasteries and collections, hands-on workshops or a festival date, then compare the location of your holiday apartment with your daily itinerary.
