Simontsevo offers a glimpse into the history of its immediate surroundings: near the settlement is a former manor house, while the remains of a destroyed church at Savarnya evoke another era. Elsewhere in Vladimir Oblast, nature and architectural history offer more to discover. You can decide whether your trip will focus mainly on Simontsevo or whether you would also like to include destinations elsewhere in the region.

Historical Sites in the Surrounding Area of Simontsevo

Near Simontsevo is a former manor house dating from the first half of the 19th century, associated with Actual State Councillor Valentin Aleksandrovich Shumilov.

The Savarnya churchyard is also nearby. Between 1823 and 1848, a stone Church of the Nativity of the Mother of God was built there. An August 2023 report describes the remains of the destroyed church as a low mound of broken bricks and brick rubble, overgrown with birch, pine, and spruce trees. The manor house and church ruins thus represent different historical themes: a former 19th-century manor and traces of a religious building.

If you plan to visit the manor house or churchyard specifically, check in advance whether visits are possible.

Nature and Culture in Vladimir Oblast

At the visitor center of Meshchera National Park in Gus-Khrustalny, 111 Internatsionalnaya Street, an exhibition hall features a model of the park area. Collections of lichens, beetles, and butterflies complement information about the nature and history of Vladimir Meshchera, tourist destinations, and the conditions for visiting them. You can explore the park model virtually and plan your own route. The exhibition can be visited independently or as part of a bookable general or themed tour.

For nature enthusiasts, Meshchera National Park describes two ecological trails with distinct features. The long trail runs from north to south through the entire national park. The short trail focuses on the wetlands of Meshchera. The difference is clear: one route crosses the entire park, while the other is a short trail with its own nature theme. Check the current visitor rules for the trails before your trip.

The architectural history of Vladimir Oblast also spans different periods and types of buildings. St. George’s Cathedral in Yuryev-Polsky dates from the 13th century and is considered an outstanding example of white-stone architecture. It is also regarded as the last church in northeastern Russia to have been built before the Mongol-Tatar invasion. In Gorokhovets, the merchants’ chambers represent a different type of building: seven of the twenty 17th-century stone houses in Russia that have survived in almost their original condition are these chambers. Sacred architecture and historic homes thus offer distinct themes for a trip through the oblast.

Choosing the Right Focus for Your Vacation Rental

When searching for a vacation rental, it helps to decide how far afield you want to travel. If you want to focus on Simontsevo and its nearby historical sites, base your choice around that destination. If your trip will also include the visitor center, the trails, or buildings in other parts of Vladimir Oblast, plan the connections between your chosen destinations separately. The key consideration is where, or in which part of the region, you plan to spend most of your time.
