Melenkovsky District: Oka floodplain and forests

Oka floodplain and forests in Melenkovsky District
The Oksky Beregovoy protected area is a distinctive natural landscape in Melenkovsky District. It extends across Melenkovsky and Muromsky districts; 19,187 hectares of it lie in Melenkovsky District. The protected area lies in the floodplain and on the Oka’s left high bank. Most of it covers the left floodplain, with additional sections along the right bank and, in part, the river itself.
Today, the floodplain is mostly treeless and largely covered with floodplain meadows. Open meadows are therefore part of this natural landscape, along with the riverbank and the river. Several viewpoints near the villages around the protected area offer views over the Oka Valley. These valley views add the wider river landscape to the picture of the floodplain.
A different natural feature can be found in the Melenkovsky protected area: bilberry, green-moss, grass and lichen pine forests dominate there, in places mixed with birch and spruce. The northern part of the protected area is mostly covered with birch forest. This gives you different natural landscapes to choose from when planning your trip: open floodplain and the Oka Valley on the one hand, and pine and birch forests on the other. Consider which of these landscapes interests you most as you plan your stay and look for holiday accommodation in the district.
Nature experiences in Vladimir Oblast
In the wider destination of Vladimir Oblast, the visitor centre of Meshchora National Park in Gus-Khrustalny offers another way to explore the region’s natural attractions. It is located at 111 Ulitsa Internatsionalnaya. The exhibition includes a model of the park and collections of lichens, beetles and butterflies. You can visit independently or book a general or themed guided tour. The model can be explored virtually and used to plan your own route. The exhibition also provides information about the nature and history of Vladimir Meshchora, tourist attractions and the conditions for visiting them.
The ecological trails are also among the nature attractions of Vladimir Oblast. The long educational trail through Meshchora runs from north to south across the entire Meshchora National Park. The park also lists the short ecological trail through the Meshchora wetlands and the route along the old Ryazan Trakt. If you would like to include one of these routes in your trip, check the current visitor conditions in advance.
Architecture and history of Vladimir Oblast
Vladimir Oblast also offers a range of historical perspectives. The St George’s Cathedral in Yuryev-Polsky dates back to the 13th century and is considered an outstanding example of white-stone architecture. It is also regarded as the last church in northeastern Rus’ to have been built before the Mongol-Tatar invasion. In Gorokhovets, the merchants’ chambers offer a glimpse into the history of residential architecture: seven of the twenty 17th-century stone houses in Russia that have survived almost in their original condition are located there.
Other notable buildings add to this picture: the Golden Gate in Vladimir is an outstanding monument of Old Russian architecture. The Church of the Intercession on the Nerl in Bogolyubovo has been called “a poem carved in stone.” These examples highlight different aspects, from medieval religious architecture and stone houses to a celebrated architectural landmark. You can consider whether you are mainly interested in the nature of Melenkovsky District or would like to include other natural and cultural attractions of Vladimir Oblast in your travel plans. Choosing your focus can also help you tailor your search for holiday accommodation to your preferred destination.
