Accommodation in Kovrovsky District
In Kovrovsky District, estate architecture and memories of a medieval princely city meet museums that bring history to life through hands-on activities. In Marinino, the Taneev estate offers a glimpse of 18th-century architecture; in Klyazminsky Gorodok, the “Starodub na Klyazme” museum explores the history of Starodub. Together with the museums in Pavlovskoye and Melekhovo, these places offer a range of cultural highlights to help you plan your stay.
Starodub: the history of a principality in the museum
The “Starodub na Klyazme” museum opened in August 2022 in the village of Klyazminsky Gorodok, where the city of Starodub once stood. The exhibition “Na drevney zemle Staroduba” covers the ancient city and its history: Starodub was founded in 1152 by Grand Prince Yuri Vladimirovich Dolgoruky as a border fortress on a high plateau on the right bank of the Klyazma. At the height of its prosperity in the 13th and 14th centuries, the city was the capital of the principality of the same name. A museum visit thus traces the story from the city’s founding to the era when Starodub held political significance.
A second exhibition is devoted to the history of the village of Klyazminsky Gorodok and its former owners, the princes Volkonsky. This exhibition also includes the diorama “Rybnaya lavka” (Fish Shop). Visitors can gain another perspective on the past by trying on replicas of chain mail, plate armor, helmets, padded undercaps and padded coifs. The museum also offers the interactive educational program “Monetnaya masterskaya Drevnego Staroduba” (Coin Workshop of Old Starodub). Historical topics and hands-on learning go hand in hand, rather than limiting the visit to a single exhibition.
Estate architecture and hands-on activities in Marinino
The Taneev estate ensemble in Marinino brings together several historical features. The wooden main manor house is a remarkable example of provincial estate architecture from the second half of the 18th century. In 1808, the Taneevs had a stone church built in honor of the Intercession of the Most Holy Mother of God. The estate park is as old as the house. Together, the manor house, church and park illustrate different elements of the estate, with none of them representing the entire complex on its own.
A series of festival events takes place at the estate throughout the year; check specific dates before your trip. The “Mir zabytoy muzyki” (World of Forgotten Music) program introduces visitors to so-called forgotten musical instruments: visitors can listen to them and play them themselves in a workshop. The “Marininskaya igra” (Marinino Game) project introduces old games of the nobility and folk games, including Biryulki, Serco, croquet and Gorodki. Check with the estate in advance to confirm whether the music and games programs are currently available. This lets you consider the architecture, events and hands-on activities as different reasons to visit.
Museums in Pavlovskoye and Melekhovo
The “Usadba dvuch generalov” museum is an organizational unit of the Kovrovsky District Museum of Local Lore and History and is located in the village of Pavlovskoye. A museum attraction in the form of a medieval fortress has also been created in Pavlovskoye. It features three log-built wooden towers, a palisade and a gate.
Melekhovo is home to the Kovrovsky District Museum of Local Lore and History, which has a permanent exhibition about the Ofeni. These itinerant traders are associated with the district’s trade history; the exhibition opened in 2018. Visitors can also learn about the traders’ artificial language on a themed tour. Melekhovo thus offers a different focus from the Starodub exhibitions: here, trade and the Ofeni language take center stage, while the exhibitions in Starodub focus on the medieval city and the village’s history.
