Ternovka: Churches, Frescoes and Literary History
Accommodation in Ternovka
Ternovka (Trunovskoye) can be explored through a clear cultural and historical theme: three churches, the village’s history and a literary tradition. The construction dates range from the mid-19th century to the early 20th century. Anyone who enjoys delving into a place’s history through specific buildings and names will find several different points of interest here.
Churches and Architectural History
There are three churches in Trunovskoye. They are complete architectural structures, not small chapels or buildings converted into prayer rooms. Together, they offer a glimpse into an architectural history that spans several decades.
Several important dates are associated with the Church of the Intercession of the Most Holy Mother of God: construction began in 1839, and the church was consecrated four years later. As part of its restoration, it was solemnly consecrated on December 10, 2017. The church preserves frescoes from the first half of the 19th century depicting the Evangelists.
The Church of the Life-Giving Trinity was consecrated in 1907. A description from 2015 already noted that it had been renovated by then. The churches’ recorded construction dates thus complement one another with different chapters of their history.
In recent years, services for the Feast of the Intercession of the Most Holy Mother of God have been held annually at the Church of the Intercession.
Literature and Village History
The literary tradition is also part of Trunovskoye’s cultural identity. It is the birthplace of the poet A. Bakhtinov. The literary competition in honor of A. Bakhtinov has been held there since 2009, and the Bakhtinov Readings have taken place since 2012. The competition and the readings offer two different ways to engage with the poet and his connection to the place.
The K. A. Trunov Museum of Local History presents the history of the village and preserves original materials about the Red Partisan unit named after K. A. Trunov. Alongside the churches, local history and historical memorabilia are therefore also in focus. For families who enjoy exploring the connections between people, events and places while traveling, this offers another cultural and historical point of interest.
Other Highlights in the Stavropol Region
The wider Stavropol Region offers other distinct themes. In Kislovodsk, the Narzan Gallery is located in the city center at the entrance to the spa park. The building is an architectural monument from the 19th century and a cultural heritage site of federal significance. Visitors are offered three types of Narzan to taste there: regular, dolomite and sulfate Narzan. Check the current terms of this offer before visiting.
Kislovodsk National Park offers a different focus: it is divided into Lower, Middle and Upper parks, with the Lower Park beginning in the city center. Mount Koltso, in turn, is a rock formation on a spur of the Borgustan Range. Weathering and erosion created an opening through the rock measuring 8 by 10 meters.
In Pyatigorsk, Mount Mashuk lies almost in the city center. The duel between Mikhail Lermontov and Nikolai Martynov took place at the mountain’s western foot in 1841. Russia’s first monument to Lermontov was also unveiled in Pyatigorsk, in 1889. Thus, alongside natural formations, the region also has literary history tied to specific locations.
When choosing a holiday destination, consider what you would most like to focus on: here, Ternovka is associated with churches, village history and Bakhtinov; the examples mentioned from Kislovodsk combine architecture, Narzan and the park, while Pyatigorsk has its own connections to Lermontov. Choose your holiday apartment based on which of these themes you would like to shape your stay.
