Stavropol Krai: Rocks and Lermontov History
Accommodation in Stavropol Krai
Stavropol Krai can be explored through its distinctive rock formations, places associated with Lermontov, and resort park architecture. Kislovodsk and Pyatigorsk offer different starting points. When looking for a vacation rental, it helps to first choose your focus: natural formations, the park and Narzan, or the history surrounding Lermontov.
Rocks and protected landscapes
At Mount Koltso, a distinctive rock formation takes center stage. The rock lies on a spur of the Borgustan Range; weathering and erosion created a 8-by-10-meter opening through it. Its dimensions give the formation a clear, striking distinction.
Lermontov Rock lies on the southern outskirts of Kislovodsk, in the Olkhovka Gorge near the settlement of Narzanny. Since 1961, it has been a natural monument of regional significance and has been part of the Mikhail Lermontov State Museum Reserve. Here, a specific landscape setting, protected status, and connection to the museum complex come together.
Kislovodsk: Gallery and Park
The Narzan Gallery is in central Kislovodsk, at the entrance to the resort park. The building is a 19th-century architectural monument and a cultural heritage site of federal significance. Visitors are offered three types of Narzan to taste: general, dolomite, and sulfate Narzan. The architecture and tasting provide two distinct reasons to visit. If tasting is especially important to you, check the current visiting arrangements in advance.
Kislovodsk National Park is divided into the Lower, Middle, and Upper parks; the Lower Park begins in the city center. The three names provide a point of reference when planning: if you are looking for a starting point in the park close to the city, you can use the Lower Park as your guide. The division also helps you narrow down your choice of park section.
Pyatigorsk and Lermontov
Mount Mashuk lies almost in the center of Pyatigorsk. At the mountain’s western foot, the duel between Mikhail Lermontov and Nikolai Martynov took place in 1841. Russia’s first monument to Lermontov was also unveiled in Pyatigorsk in 1889. Here, a striking mountain backdrop sits alongside two distinct historical connections: the duel at Mashuk and the history of the monument.
Another connection with nature is the ecological walking trail on Mount Strizhament. It has a maintained path and information boards. If you plan to walk the trail, it is a good idea to briefly check its current condition on site.
Spa resources across the wider travel region
The Caucasian Mineral Waters region also offers a regional perspective on spa resources. These include sulfur-rich mineral mud from Lake Tambukan, which is used for mud treatments at all the spa resorts. There are more than 130 mineral springs in the region, 90 of which are used for therapeutic purposes. The favorable climate in the southwest of the region is also used for climate therapy: year-round in Kislovodsk, and mainly during the warm season at the other spa resorts. This seasonal distinction relates to the spa practices described and can serve as a guide when choosing when to travel.
