Pyatigorsk can be explored through two very different sides: the literary sites associated with Mikhail Lermontov and the striking landscapes of Mount Mashuk and Mount Goryachaya. In Tsvetnik Park, the grotto and gallery tell the story of the city’s cultural history; at Proval, a long tunnel leads to an underground lake. This raises a practical question when planning your vacation: should you focus on the park and museum, or on viewpoints and trails?

Lermontov’s Pyatigorsk and Tsvetnik Park

Tsvetnik Park was laid out in the summer of 1828 near the Nikolayevsky Baths, by order of General A. P. Yermolov. It is considered Pyatigorsk’s oldest park and is a popular place for walks among residents and visitors. In its southern part is Diana’s Grotto, a cool, shady grotto structure that Mikhail Lermontov visited many times. On the evening of July 8, 1841, he and his friends held a “country ball” (bal champêtre) in front of Diana’s Grotto in honor of some ladies. For this one-time occasion, the grotto was decorated with greenery, carpets and colorful lanterns.

The Lermontov Gallery is also a defining feature of Tsvetnik Park and one of Pyatigorsk’s landmarks. At the Lermontov House Museum, the focus is on the poet in the Caucasus and his role in the history of Russian culture. The house became the M. Y. Lermontov State Museum Reserve in 1973 and is designated a historical monument of federal importance. Guided tours and lectures, as well as exhibitions and displays about Lermontov’s life and work, are held there regularly. If you would like to see a particular exhibition or take a specific tour, check the current topics and dates in advance.

The Pyatigorsk Museum of Local History was founded in 1903 as the museum of the Caucasian Mountain Society. Its permanent exhibitions include “Natural Features of the CMS Region,” “History of the Pyatigorsk Area” and “The Great Patriotic War.” These offer different ways to explore the city and its history: literary heritage at the Lermontov House, the history of Tsvetnik Park, and regional nature and history at the local history museum.

Viewpoints and distinctive landmarks

On the summit in the western part of Mount Goryachaya stands the Chinese Gazebo, a freestanding metal pavilion. From there, you can see Pyatigorsk, Beshtau and Mount Mashuk. Another landmark is the white Aeolian Gazebo, also known as the Aeolian Harp: built in 1831, it stands on the edge of a cliff above the city. The cliff drops steeply to the east toward the Academic Gallery.

On the slope of Mount Mashuk is the Love Gate viewpoint, also known as the Sun Gate. From there, you can see Pyatigorsk, Beshtau, and the Yutsa and Dzhutsa mountains. The Pyatigorsk cable car goes to the summit of Mount Mashuk; check its current operating status before planning your visit. These different viewpoints give your trip a clear focus: you can center it on the views from Mount Goryachaya or on the vistas from Mount Mashuk without confusing the two locations.

Proval and trails on Mount Mashuk

Proval is an underground lake on the southeastern slope of Mount Mashuk, accessible through a long tunnel. Its water glows blue; hydrogen sulfide evaporating from the water creates bubbles on the surface. The area in front of the tunnel entrance is paved and furnished with benches. An audio guide tells the story of the lake and reads excerpts from well-known novels. As the facilities may change, check their availability before your visit. Bus route 1 and a walking path along Gagarin Boulevard lead to Proval; it is worth checking the current timetable if you plan to take the bus.

Three well-maintained walking trails run along the slopes of Mount Mashuk through mixed forest among oak and maple trees. There are also three routes for health-promoting walks, known as terrenkurs. These offer different options for planning an active day: forest trails, walking routes or a destination such as Proval. If you would like to include the summit, the cable car is another way to reach Mount Mashuk.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Pyatigorsk, you can first decide which of these themes you want to shape your stay. Museums, exhibitions and the history of Tsvetnik Park are ideal for a culture-focused vacation; Proval, forest trails and viewpoints put scenery and outdoor activities in the foreground. Then choose your accommodation based on the places you actually plan to visit, and plan journeys or walks with current conditions in mind.
