Nature and Culture in the Wider Travel Destination of the Republic of Mordovia
The “Get to Know the Mordovian Nature Reserve!” nature trail is located in Pushhta, near the reserve’s central administration. Visitors can learn more about typical local flora and fauna, as well as the animals and ecosystems of its waterways. According to the reserve’s visitor rules, a special permit is required to visit the trail.
Founded on March 7, 1995, Smolny National Park protects particularly valuable natural complexes in the coniferous-deciduous mixed forest zone of the Republic of Mordovia. The southern part of its forest area and the adjacent floodplain of the Alatyr River together form an internationally significant ornithological area. A 1.5-kilometer ecological nature trail called “Forest Work” runs through pine and deciduous forest and shares information about forest protection and reforestation. The “Forest Work” trail is accessible only during the warm season. It is distinct from the “Lesnoy trial” tourist route in Smolny National Park, which is equipped for cycling and skiing. The “Phenology of the Russian Forest” cycling, skiing and hiking route, in turn, introduces visitors to seasonal changes in the development of plants and animals.
In Parakino, the “MASTOR. Turisticheskie tropy izucheniya miroustroistva i dolgoletiya” trail was created with three ethnographic nature trails. They lead through the surroundings of the old Mordvinian village of Parakino; the concept is designed for year-round use. Along the trails are rest areas with gazebos, places to take a break, spaces for traditional Mordvinian games, swings and art installations in the natural landscape. As amenities may change, it is best to check what is available on site before your visit.
The natural history museum of the Mordovian Nature Reserve offers a different focus: visitors can listen interactively to animal and bird calls. Guided tours are available year-round for groups and individuals; book in advance. This makes it possible to explore nature-related topics in the wider destination both on outdoor trails and through the museum’s exhibits.
