The Republic of Mordovia offers different ways to experience nature and culture: protected forest landscapes, nature trails and themes related to the traditions of the Erzya people. When planning a trip, you can first consider whether natural history and forest conservation or cultural discoveries should shape your stay. These priorities give your search for a holiday rental a clear direction.

Forest Landscapes and Nature Conservation

Smolny National Park was established on 7 March 1995 to protect especially valuable natural complexes in the coniferous-deciduous forest zone of the Republic of Mordovia. In the southern part of the forest area and the adjoining floodplain of the Alatyr River lies an ornithological area of global significance. The forest and river floodplain together form a distinctive natural landscape here; its importance for birdlife is a special feature of the area.

Nature Trails with Different Themes

In the national park, the “Forest Work” ecological nature trail runs for 1.5 kilometres through pine and deciduous forest. Along the way, visitors learn about forest conservation and reforestation. The trail is accessible only during the warmer months. The “Lesnoi Trial” tourist trail is equipped for cycling and skiing. Another perspective is offered by the “Phenology of the Russian Forest” cycling, skiing and hiking route: it explains how plants and animals develop over the course of the seasons. The trails therefore cover different themes—from forest protection and regeneration to seasonal changes in nature.

Natural History Discoveries in Pushhta

Near the central administration of the Mordovian Nature Reserve in Pushhta is the “Get to Know the Mordovian Nature Reserve!” nature trail. It introduces visitors to typical representatives of the local flora and fauna, animals and aquatic ecosystems. According to the visitor rules, a special permit is required to visit the trail.

The nature reserve’s natural history museum offers guided tours for groups and individuals throughout the year; advance booking is required. Interactive activities include listening to animal and bird calls. A cross-section of a tree more than 140 years old is also on display. The museum and nature trail offer different focuses: the guided tours combine natural history with a museum visit, while the trail centres on local flora, fauna and aquatic ecosystems.

Ethnographic Trails and Traditions in Parakino

The walking route “MASTOR. Tourist Trails for Exploring the World Order and Longevity” was established in Parakino and includes three ethnographic nature trails through the scenic surroundings of the old Mordvinian village. The trails are designed for year-round use. Along them are rest areas with gazebos, designated picnic spots, spaces for traditional Mordvinian games, swings and art installations set in the natural landscape. The facilities may change; if a particular amenity is important to you, check its current status before your visit.

Parakino also offers a cultural way to experience the region: the “House of Traditions in Parakino” museum and cultural tourism centre is a local attraction. Folklore, traditional clothing, customs, crafts and the Erzya language are preserved in Parakino. The theatrical series “Calendar Customs and Us” has become especially popular. It includes the programmes “Laying Out the Linen for Indian Summer”, “Pokrov – the Beginning of Winter”, “Kolyada Came Along”, “Broad Maslenitsa”, “The First Furrow Festival” and “Trinity – Green Svyatki”. Which programmes are held on particular dates may vary.

Using Your Interests to Plan Your Trip

For natural history and forest conservation, there are trails in the national park and nature reserve; the designated routes are of interest to those looking for cycling or skiing activities. In Parakino, ethnographic nature trails and Erzya traditions offer a different focus. If you are looking for a holiday rental in the Republic of Mordovia, these different themes can help you decide what kind of stay you want.
