Tsagan Aman is shaped by golden sandy beaches on the Volga and prominent landmarks throughout the town. When choosing a holiday apartment, consider whether you are more interested in the riverside landscape, religious symbols or the town’s history of remembrance.

The Volga and the Sandbank: Two Seasonal Perspectives

Tsagan Aman has golden sandy beaches along the Volga riverbank. Near the town is the “Skovorodka” sandbank, with light-coloured sand and shallow water; in summer, you can reach it on foot through the water. Water levels can vary, which is something to take into account when planning your trip.

The beach season lasts from May to September, peaking in July and August. The sandbank is accessible in summer. The beaches are therefore a point of reference for several months, while access to the sandbank depends on the summer water route.

Getting Your Bearings by the River

Tsagan Aman is located directly on the R-22 “Kaspiy” federal highway. A ferry runs from here across the Volga to Astrakhan Oblast; check locally before travelling to see whether it is currently operating. The highway location and the possible river crossing are two different aspects of getting your bearings: for the ferry, current operations matter; for the highway, it is the town’s location on the named route.

Local Landmarks and Remembrance

A Buddha statue stands in the centre of Tsagan Aman, and a white stele stands at the entrance to the town. The memorial park commemorates residents who fell in the Second World War with the “Skorbyashchaya Mat” monument. The monument was erected in the park in 1991 and is a listed monument. These places represent different facets of the townscape: a religious depiction, a landmark at the entrance and a place of remembrance.

Every autumn, a sand mandala of the Medicine Buddha is created and ritually destroyed in Tsagan Aman. Alongside the permanent landmarks, the town also has recurring cultural events throughout the year.

The Volga Landscape Across from the Town

Tsagan Aman’s sandy beaches lie on the right bank of the Volga. Across the river, on the left bank, the nature park of the Republic of Kalmykia stretches for 8 km. The park is a protected area of regional significance and was established in 1995. Its landscape includes river channels, eriks, floodplain forests, reed beds and meadows. The banks on either side of the town are therefore quite different: the beaches lie on one side, while the protected river and floodplain landscape lies on the other.

Regional Landscapes of the Republic of Kalmykia

In the wider destination of the Republic of Kalmykia, the “Chyornye Zemli” State Nature Reserve encompasses steppe, semi-desert and desert landscapes. Its “Ozero Manych-Gudilo” section is a wetland of international importance and serves as a breeding and wintering ground for many rare waterbirds and waders.

The nature reserve has five excursion eco-trails and routes. One of them, “Tropoy saygaka”, runs through the reserve and its protected zone, is 35 to 60 kilometres long, and was developed for observing wild saiga antelopes. Seasonal arrangements may vary; check availability with the operator. Visitors may move around the reserve only under the supervision of reserve staff and a guide.
