The nature of the Republic of Kalmykia takes many forms in the Chyornye Zemli State Nature Reserve: the area includes steppe, semi-desert and desert landscapes and is home to the Kalmyk saiga population. Ecological trails turn the region’s wildlife and plant life into a tangible focus for a trip – from observing wild saigas to watching birds along lake shores and fields of tulips on an island.

Landscape and saiga watching

The “Tropoyu saygaka” ecological trail runs through the Chyornye Zemli Nature Reserve and its protected zone. It was created for observing wild saigas. The exact route may vary depending on the season. The trail is 35 to 60 kilometres long, and the time given to walk it is two to two and a half hours. If you are planning an outing, keep both figures in mind.

The saiga trail connects the landscape of the nature reserve with a clear focus on nature. This differs from a tour centred on birds by the lake or in the salt wetlands. You can choose your trails according to the wildlife you are most interested in observing.

Birds along the lake shore and salt wetlands

The “Ptitsy ozera Manych-Gudilo” ecological trail follows the shore of Manych-Gudilo. From there, you can observe colonies of cormorants, black-headed gulls, great white pelicans and Dalmatian pelicans on other islands. The route is 45 kilometres long; the version with an overnight stay is 150 kilometres. It combines the lakeshore landscape with views of bird colonies on the islands.

The “Zverinaya tropa i lebedinoye ozero” trail offers a different kind of wildlife experience: it is 1.2 kilometres long. There is an observation hide on the shore of the lake at the end of the trail. Birds found at the lake include mute swans, herons, coots, dabbling and diving ducks, marsh harriers and waders. The short trail and birdwatching hide make this route quite different from the long stretch along Manych-Gudilo.

Sections of the “Mekletinskiye rozovyye ozera” trail pass through steppe habitats and alongside drying salt wetlands. Rare birds such as bustards, steppe eagles, long-legged buzzards and demoiselle cranes can be seen there. April to October is given as the visiting season for the trail; check conditions before your trip.

Tulip blossom on an island

The 5.3-kilometre “Tyulpany Manycha” walking trail crosses Pyatisotka Island and passes extensive fields of tulips in bloom, in a variety of colours. The trail includes a boat trip from the shore of Manych-Gudilo to the island. The flowering season is around April, making the tulips a seasonal focus for trip planning.

Saiga watching, birdlife and tulip blossom appeal to different nature interests. If you want to combine several of them on one trip, start by choosing which trails and season matter most. The trail lengths, the duration of the saiga trail and the approximate flowering season can help you plan your outings in detail.

Choose accommodation to suit your travel interests

If you are looking for a holiday rental in the Republic of Kalmykia, use the nature experiences you want to have as a starting point for choosing where to stay. First consider whether the saiga landscape, birdwatching or tulip blossom will be the main focus of your trip; then you can target your search more precisely around the places you want to explore. This way, your planning starts with what you want to experience, rather than with a type of accommodation alone.
