Landscape and Nature
The Murighiol area features a varied landscape of hills and valleys and is bordered by the Danube to the east. The protected natural area of Lacul Beibugeac-Plopu lies near the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve. Its fine, invertebrate-rich muddy bottom attracts wading birds, ducks, shelducks, and swans.
Ghiolul Pietrei is designated as a fishing area in the Murighiol region. A tourist pass is required to access the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve.
Culture and History
The archaeological site of Cetatea Halmyris is a Roman and Roman-Byzantine fortress 2.5 kilometers east of the village of Murighiol. Halmyris was the base of military units and a station of the Danube fleet Classis Flavia Moesica. The excavations uncovered military, civilian, and religious buildings, including a bishop's basilica with the crypt of the first martyrs of Dobrudja, Epictet and Astion.
The complete relics of Epictet and Astion were discovered in the summer of 2001 and have been displayed for veneration at Halmyris Monastery in Murighiol since 2008. The annual calendar also includes the Festivalul Serbarile Apei ÅŸi Pescuitului: the annual festival takes place from September 15 to 17 and was established in 2000.
In the village of Murighiol, winter customs are observed from Christmas Eve on December 24 through the Epiphany on January 6. These include colindatul, pluguşorul, semănatul, sorcova, capra, and ursul.
