Traian – Water, Nature and History
Accommodation in Traian
Traian lies where the Cerna River flows into the lake that bears the name of the village. The village of Traian also has an artificial lake.
Lacul Traian and Birdlife
Lacul Traian is of particular interest for ornithological studies. Birdlife is the main focus of natural history here. For those interested in nature, observing birds is the main nature-related activity at Lacul Traian. The artificial lake in the village is another water-related feature within Traian. Here, nature and water can be considered a distinct area of interest alongside the archaeological traces at Dealul Cale-Baie. For birdwatchers, Lacul Traian is a specific point of reference within Traian.
Archaeological Traces at Dealul Cale-Baie
In the central-eastern part of Traian, a Roman fort is located on the Dealul Cale-Baie hill. At the foot of Dealul Cale-Baie lies the archaeological site “Traian–Dealul Cale-Baie.” The two traces are not in the same location: the fort is on the hill, while the site is at its foot. For those interested in culture, there are two archaeological points here with different locations. The hill area and its foot thus create a distinct spatial arrangement within Traian.
Founding History and Church Art
Traian was founded around the middle of the 18th century. On Schmidt’s 1774 map, the new settlement appears under the name Satu Nou. Traian and Satu Nou refer to the same settlement. The church “Sfânta Cuvioasă Parascheva” in Traian belongs to a later period. It was built between 1907 and 1914 and has five mosaic icons on its façade. The church therefore belongs to a later construction phase than the founding of the village. For those interested in culture, the church’s construction period and the five mosaic icons on its façade are the main points of interest.
Archaeological Sites in the Surrounding Area
The tumulus lies west of Movila Breazului, about 500 m on the other side of the road. An archaeological settlement is also located on the border between Dorobațu and Traian. For orientation in the area around Traian, Movila Breazului and the border with Dorobațu can be used as different points of reference. The tumulus and the settlement are therefore located in different parts of the wider surrounding area.
Arrival via Cerna
From the centre of the municipality of Cerna, Traian can be reached via a road running along the Cerna River. A second road connects the localities on the western side of Tulcea County and also leads to Traian. Both roads begin at the Cerna municipal centre. For travel planning, Cerna is therefore the common starting point; the routes differ in that one follows the river, while the other connects the localities on the western side of Tulcea County. The journey from Cerna can thus be planned along two different road directions without changing the common starting point.
