Culture and History

The Mănăstirea Putna Monastery was built by Ștefan cel Mare between 1466 and 1469. Until the time of Petru Rareș, it became the princely necropolis for members of its founder’s family. Shortly after its consecration, Mănăstirea Putna became an important centre of Romanian culture and art.

The religious buildings in Putna include the Orthodox Biserica „Nașterea Maicii Domnului“ Church, which was built between 1900 and 1908. The Roman Catholic Biserica „Coborârea Duhului Sfânt“ Church was built in 1936.

According to tradition, the Orthodox wooden church Biserica de lemn „Intrarea Maicii Domnului în Biserică“, also known as Biserica de lemn „Dragoș Vodă“ or Schitul Putna, dates from the mid-14th century. Today, the historic wooden church serves as a chapel and museum.

The decoration of eggs remains a living artistic craft tradition in Putna to this day. The treasure tower is one of the preserved fortification elements of the Mănăstirea Putna Monastery.

Landscape

The two settlements belonging to Putna Commune originally developed in the valley of the Putna stream. The wooded hills around Putna reach elevations of up to approximately 800 metres.

Chilia lui Daniil Sihastrul is a grotto carved into a rock in the valley of the Vițău stream and is located approximately 1 kilometre from the Mănăstirea Putna Monastery.

Dealul Crucii, also known as CruciÅŸorul, is marked by a monumental stone cross without an inscription. The site lies south-east of the monastery, immediately across the Putna stream.

Getting Your Bearings Locally

The museum of the Mănăstirea Putna Monastery is located on the west side of the monastery complex next to the Paraclis. The Orthodox Biserica „Nașterea Maicii Domnului“ Church is located in the village cemetery near the wooden church of Putna. The Roman Catholic Biserica „Coborârea Duhului Sfânt“ Church is located in the centre of the village of Putna.

Mănăstirea Sihăstria Putnei is a place visited by pilgrims for services held there, spiritual guidance and a period of rest.

The centre of Putna extends along the main road DN 2H. The Suceava–Putna railway line has resumed operations.

Classification
