Broșteni: Holiday Apartment, Mountains and Culture
Accommodation in Broșteni
Broșteni lies in the southeastern part of the Dornă Basin, in the middle reaches of the Bistrița River. Mountains cover 85 percent of the area of Broșteni. This geographical location connects the river valley with a municipal area largely defined by mountain landscapes.
Nature and Landscape
In the mountains surrounding Broșteni, the vegetation zones range from the coniferous forest belt to the alpine zone. Bilberry, blueberry and mountain peony shrubs shape the landscape of the meadows. Different altitudinal zones and typical plant communities therefore exist side by side in the area, without the landscape being limited to a single type of terrain.
The waterways are also part of the area’s natural scenery. The fast-flowing waters around Broșteni are home to trout, grayling and huchen. The streams and rivers thus form a distinct part of the regional landscape, complementing the mountain and meadow areas with a water-rich natural setting.
The wildlife includes several species found in the forests and waters of the Broșteni area. These include, among others, red deer, roe deer, bears, wild boar and capercaillie.
Culture and History
An important historic building is the Orthodox wooden church “Sfântul Nicolae” in Broșteni. It was built in the second half of the 18th century and is also known as the Biserica-muzeu “Ion Creangă”. The combination of an Orthodox wooden church, its historic age and its designation as a museum gives the site several cultural dimensions.
The wooden church is also linked to the local history of education. Several pupils studied at the school of the “Sfântul Nicolae” wooden church in 1848–1849; Ion Creangă was among them. The writer’s name is therefore directly associated with this school site in Broșteni.
On Mount Goia, the remains of a stone known locally as “Piatra scrisă” have been preserved. In the village of Holda, there is also a school built in 1905 that is considered a tourist attraction. Together, these two sites broaden the historical perspective beyond the wooden church to include a mountain location and another village.
Another cultural destination is located in the village of Cotârgaşi: the Old Rite Eden Monastery. Eden Monastery was founded in 1992. Its founding year and location are therefore among the clearly identifiable characteristics of this monastery.
