Brănești lies on the left bank of the Pasărea River. The settlement is situated in a clearing amid the former forests of Vlăsia. Lake Brănești contains the archaeological settlement of Ostrov, a registered Neolithic site southwest of the village of Brănești. Ceramic fragments and anthropomorphic statuettes of the Gumelnița culture were discovered on Ostrov; they attest to a Neolithic cultural and civilizational site there. The site’s location in the lake and its position southwest of the village also place it within the landscape of Brănești. The ceramic fragments and anthropomorphic statuettes belong to the Gumelnița culture and together represent the Neolithic cultural and civilizational site documented there.

Culture

Pasărea Monastery was first mentioned in 1813 as a convent. Since 1966, its former refectory building has housed a collection of religious objects. The parish church of Brănești was intended to be built as a copy of the Church of Sfântul Gheorghe in Cernica. In addition to the monastery and the parish church, an explicitly named ecclesiastical model is therefore also part of the site’s historical tradition. The ecclesiastical tradition thus comprises several distinct references: the monastery’s historical mention, the later collection in the former refectory, and the named model for the parish church. The Church of Sfântul Gheorghe in Cernica remains the specific model for the planned copy.

Nature

Its location on the Pasărea and in the clearing of the former forests of Vlăsia describes Brănești through two specific landscape references. Brănești accounts for 4% of the ROSPA0122 Lacul și Pădurea Cernica bird sanctuary. The name of the protected area explicitly refers to Lake Cernica and Cernica Forest. The riverbank, the former forest area, and the share of the protected area thus represent different landscape references. The name of the protected area explicitly refers to the lake and forest of Cernica, while the 4% numerically defines Brănești’s share.

History

The Ziua Cucilor takes place in Brănești on Lăsata Secului de Brânză. In the folk calendar, the Cucilor festival marks the beginning of the new agricultural year. The Cucilor custom is said to be performed annually by young people. The name of the festival and the custom preserve both the specific date and the connection to the folk calendar. The custom is described in both temporal and social terms: Lăsata Secului de Brânză identifies the occasion in the calendar, while the annual performance is attributed to young people. Thus, the festival name, date, and performers appear together in the same traditional account.
