Stavanger: Island Nature, Architecture and Culture

Stavanger combines a varied island world with urban nature, historic buildings and a range of cultural sites. A nature reserve and lakes, wooden houses and a medieval cathedral each add their own distinctive touch. This makes it possible to explore the city through a variety of interests rather than limiting your stay to a single theme.

Water, Islands and Urban Nature

Mosvatnet is a protected nature reserve; it was designated on 15 August 2025. Its important natural features include birds and bats. Breiavatnet offers a different perspective on nature: the lake is home to swans, ducks and several species of gull. In central Stavanger, Byparken surrounds the lake. This lets you experience two different sides of the urban landscape: Mosvatnet as a nature reserve, and Breiavatnet, which is surrounded by Byparken in the centre of Stavanger.

Stavanger has 37 islands, large and small. The island world includes beautiful natural scenery, good swimming spots, barbecue areas and mountain peaks. This range makes island life a theme in its own right, alongside the city's lakes and green spaces. If you are particularly interested in nature and water when planning your trip, you will find different points of interest here than if you focus on architectural history or museums.

Wooden Architecture and Historic Sites

Stavanger's Trehusbyen comprises around 8,000 houses. Architectural styles range from Empire and Art Nouveau to Functionalism. This diversity makes the architecture a distinctive part of the cityscape: rather than a single era, several styles come together within Trehusbyen.

Stavanger Cathedral is the only medieval cathedral to have preserved its original architecture. It was probably built in 1125, after Sigurd Jorsalfarer declared Stavanger a cathedral city; services have been held there since 1125. At the end of Hafrsfjord, in Stavanger Municipality, the Sverd i fjell monument commemorates the Battle of Hafrsfjord in 872. Museum Stavanger – MUST comprises eight museums in Stavanger. Together, these places take you from architecture and religious history to museum visits and historical remembrance.

Vålandstårnet is also part of the city's architectural history: the observation tower was built in 1895. If you want to get to know Stavanger through its varied buildings, you can include a tower from the late 19th century alongside its medieval and more recent architectural landmarks.

Reconstructions, Animals and Walking Routes

The Iron Age Farm, a reconstructed farm from the Migration Period (350–550 AD), is located at Ullandhaug in Stavanger. The visitor centre at Jernaldergården includes a café, an exhibition and toilets. It is open during the farm's opening hours, so plan your visit accordingly.

Gausel fritidsgård offers a different experience: this farm for animal visits has goats, sheep, chickens, pigs, cows and two alpacas. The Blue Promenade starts at the Badedammen outdoor swimming pool and passes the Fiskepiren terminal. The animal farm and promenade offer very different themes, while the Iron Age Farm provides a glimpse of a reconstructed historic farmstead.

The 2023 edition of Matløypa at Ullandhaug combined tasting experiences with information about food, nature and the environment. For that edition, the event was scheduled for the last Sunday in September; check current event dates before making plans.
