Nature
Veyssilieu is located in a hilly, green landscape. The circular hiking trail “Autour de Veyssilieu” begins in Veyssilieu and leads to viewpoints as well as to the Notre-Dame-de-la-Salette Chapel at the summit of Mont Chatelan.
Those who choose Veyssilieu as their travel destination may wish to rent a holiday apartment there.
Culture
On the path leading to the Notre-Dame-de-la-Salette Chapel, there is a calvary that was blessed in 1893. A statue of Notre-Dame de la Salette stands on the raised gable of the chapel. The sculptural group Notre-Dame-de-la-Salette is protected as movable cultural heritage.
The present-day Saint-Hilaire Church was built in 1891, replacing an earlier church that had been destroyed. Saint-Hilaire Church is documented as early as the 14th century and houses a group of stained-glass windows created around 1890 by the Grenoble-born artist Etienne Buche.
The Notre-Dame-de-la-Salette Chapel was built by the priest Jacques Philippe Douare as a thanksgiving for the Virgin Mary having protected the parishioners from cholera. It was opened for worship in 1867 and restored in 1978.
History
On the heights of the municipality stands the Château de Veyssilieu, a private castle dating from the 13th century. Only the round tower remains of the original complex. Restoration of the Château de Veyssilieu began in 1828; it was given a new main building and two square towers.
