Landscape and nature

Isère is characterized by four mountain ranges and an elevation difference of 3,954 meters. Anyone wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Isere can then continue searching for accommodation. The Bournillon karst basin is a karst landscape shaped by erosion and water emerging from the Bournillon Cave. The Chartreuse combines elevations ranging from 200 to 2,082 meters with forests, preserved nature, villages and panoramic views.

At the ENS du bois de la Bâtie and in the marais de Montfort, guided nature activities use binoculars, spotting scopes and magnifying glasses so that visitors can observe details that might otherwise easily go unnoticed.

Culture and history

The cultural heritage includes more than 300 listed historic buildings, 125 sites bearing the “Patrimoine en Isère” label and 70 museums. In addition, 800 fortified structures are recorded in Isère, along with hundreds of castles. The Château du Gouvernement in Saint-Pierre-d’Entremont, Isère, was built in the early 14th century.

In the late 19th century, Proveysieux became a meeting place and source of inspiration for landscape painters from the Grenoble area. In the late 11th century, Saint Bruno founded the Carthusian Order and its first monastery in the Chartreuse mountains.

The aqueduct of Saint-Nazaire-en-Royans is 35 meters high and 235 meters long; it was built between 1873 and 1876. The Hameau du Ranc bears witness to life in times gone by through the ruins of houses, old meadows and former charcoal-burning sites, and has a picnic table. Pont-en-Royans is known for houses suspended above the Bourne; the town center is home to a water museum.

Hiking

The Chartreuse hiking network includes a selection of 50 signposted hiking routes for all levels of difficulty. The Au fil de la Bourne route is 33 kilometers long, crosses eight municipalities in Isère and Drôme, and leads through varied landscapes to viewpoints. This route is accessible by public transport.

Winter

Winter visitors to Isère can choose between snowshoe hikes, sledding and walks on marked trails.

Cycling

Isère has 370 kilometers of greenways and cycle paths between the banks of the Rhône and the Oisans passes. There are also 21 renowned cycling passes and climbs covering 290 kilometers, as well as 21 signposted cycling circuits covering 956 kilometers on departmental and municipal roads. Isère Attractivité has developed 18 safe leisure routes for electric-assisted bicycles and electric-assisted mountain bikes; services include charging stations, parking spaces and electric-assisted bicycle rental.
