In Vertrieu, the Maison-Forte de Vertrieu stands on a rocky promontory above the village. It dates from the 13th century. As a stately residence dating from the 17th century, it has four square towers, a landscaped park and outbuildings on the banks of the Rhône; it was remodelled in the 18th and 19th centuries. Renting a holiday apartment in Vertrieu is part of personal travel planning.
Culture and History
The Château de Vertrieu, its outbuildings, the park, the associated buildings and the large gateway have been listed as historic monuments since 1991. The cemetery chapel of Vertrieu was built in the mid-19th century on the initiative of Ferdinand de Laroullière. In the Forêt de Serverin, the Glacière de Vertrieu was built in 1716 as a precursor to the refrigerator; it was used until the beginning of the 20th century and restored in 1995.
The historic Bac à traille is also part of the history of the area. It is no longer visible today; once, it enabled residents to cross between the two banks of the Rhône.
Gardens and Visits
The courtyards of the inhabited Maison-Forte de Vertrieu are open to visitors during the European Heritage Days and at local festivals. The park and French garden of the Maison-Forte are open to visitors free of charge every day from 1 May to 14 July, from 12:00 to 18:00, as well as during the European Heritage Days.
The Jardin des Simples has benches, tables and a small picnic area, and contains catalogued medicinal and flowering plants.
Trails and Landscape
The Croix du Serverin consists of a 6-metre-high stone cross and has an orientation table. From there, you can look out over Vertrieu, the Rhône, the Monts du Bugey and the Plaine de l'Ain. The “La boucle du Serverin” hike begins at the entrance to the village and leads to the “La Croix du Serverin” viewpoint; along the way, it heads towards the source of Bonson.
The Parcours patrimonial de Vertrieu is accessible every day all year round.
