Vernas: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The buildings in Vernas include the Château du Cingle, the Château de Verna and the Chapelle Saint-Joseph. The Château du Cingle was probably built by the Pèlerin family in the second half of the 14th century. It consists of three sections of the building enclosing a rectangular courtyard. On the west side, this courtyard is closed off by a high wall with a round-arched portal.

Culture

The Château du Cingle is partially protected as a historic monument. Its façades and roofs, as well as the fireplace in the corner room on the first floor, are protected. At the Château de Verna, the façades and roofs, the grand staircase and its stairwell, as well as the landscaped part of the gardens are protected. The Château de Verna also preserves a square keep from the 14th century.

The Chapelle Saint-Joseph was founded between 1623 and 1650 by Raymond Dauphin de Verna and Bonne Pourroy, blessed in 1651 and restored in 1978. The private Église Saint-Martin in Vernas was built between 1840 and 1844. It has been abandoned since 1946; the Anrev association has been pursuing a restoration project since 2021.

Vernas is home to a megalithic monument known as the “tombe du général” or “tombe du char”. The rural heritage includes numerous washhouses and fountains. The current owners of the Château du Cingle open it to the public, particularly for guided tours by request and during the European Heritage Days; concerts are held in the courtyard in summer.

Nature

In the immediate vicinity of Vernas are Mont d'Annoisin, a mountain, and the Chapelle de Marcilleux, a church. In the wider regional area are the Château des Allymes, a castle, the Chartreuse Notre-Dame de Portes, a monastery, the Château de Césarges, a castle, as well as the mountains Mont Falcon, Mont d'Argironne and Crêt de Pont.

In the Village

In the centre of Vernas there is a landscaped park with a children's playground, a green space for recreation, football and pétanque courts, as well as a tennis court.

Getting Around

The Site d'escalade de Vernas climbing area can be reached via the road towards Hières-sur-Amby. Parking is available at the Chapelle Saint-Joseph; from there, a 150-metre path leads to the site on the right.

Vernas is located along the freely accessible walking route “Tour du plateau de Larina par Hières-sur-Amby et Vernas”. The walk leads to the Plateau de Larina, with its rock formations and an archaeological site. Independent, unguided visits in Vernas are possible every day throughout the year and are free of charge.
