The Forêt domaniale R.T.M. Pellafol lies at the heart of the Massif de L’Obiou et des Gorges de la Souloise Natura 2000 site. The forest is recognised for its biodiversity and good state of conservation. Its area is also home to an old canal that was built by hand along the rocky slope and once carried water from the Souloise to irrigate the plain.
One of the most notable natural features is the Sources des Gillardes. After the Fontaine de Vaucluse, they are France’s second-largest springs in terms of discharge. Several very easily accessible hikes start at the Sources des Gillardes.

Hiking and Geology
The themed footpath to the geological ruins of Vieux Pellafol is a geological walk through the erosion features that shape the mountain and create so-called fairy chimneys. As a circular route, the trail is 5 km long, climbs 248 m in elevation and takes around 2 hours and 30 minutes. In favourable weather conditions, the themed footpath is freely accessible every day throughout the year.
The circular route Circuit pédestre de la Souloise: la petite boucle is also one of the described trails. The easy walk features information boards about river life, the Gillardes springs, rocks and forests.
Culture and History
The Maison du Patrimoine de Pellafol comprises two rooms dedicated to rural life in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Exhibits include traditional costumes, games, objects and small agricultural machines. The building is housed in a former property that contained an inn and a forge, and focuses on life in the past as well as important episodes in local history.
The exhibition is complemented by a collection of old objects gathered by residents of this rural and mountainous region.
