Nature
More than 50% of Mizoën’s municipal area belongs to the Natura 2000 site “Marais à laîche bicolore, prairies de fauche et habitats rocheux du Ferrand et du Plateau d’Emparis”. Among the species found there are marmots, chamois, bearded vultures, golden eagles and alpine gentians.
The Plateau d’Emparis is designated as a classified site to protect its remarkable landscapes and is preserved from development and damage caused by human activities. It is a 2,415-hectare flower-rich alpine pasture plateau offering 360-degree views of the surrounding mountain ranges and their glaciers.
Lac Lovitel provides favourable conditions for amphibian development. The site is home to the common adder’s-tongue fern and simple meadow-rue; both are protected at regional level. Fontaine Pétrifiante is a natural cascade at an altitude of 1,750 metres in the municipality of Mizoën and is visible from the GR54C. Its tufa formation is protected by a prefectural biotope protection order and included in the European Natura 2000 network.
Trails and Activities
The Les Clots site is one of the main excursion destinations in Mizoën in summer. The Plateau d’Emparis is also one of the main excursion destinations in Mizoën in summer. In winter, ski touring and snowshoeing are practised there.
The difficult, four-day circular route “Tour du plateau d’Emparis depuis Mizoën” is a 43.7-kilometre multi-day hike along GR and PR trails. The Via ferrata du Voile de la Mariée climbs alongside a waterfall to the Refuge des Clots.
Paddleboarding and pedal boating are available on the lake at Base nautique du Chambon.
Culture
Mizoën is home to the Les Clots ecomuseum. A traditional bread oven forms part of Mizoën’s cultural heritage. In the Ferrand Valley, the Festival des randonnées musicales has taken place every summer since 1999, with events in July and August.
