Crémieu is an emblematic medieval town with preserved town walls and a 15th-century market hall. The hall is 61 metres long and 19.50 metres wide and is considered one of the largest market halls in France.
Renting a holiday apartment can be a separate consideration alongside choosing the location when planning a stay in Crémieu.
History
The first written records of Crémieu date from the late 12th century. A charter of liberties granted in 1315 by Dauphin Jean II created the conditions for Crémieu’s sustained growth, including the construction of a new town.
The former castle of the Dauphins stands on Saint-Laurent Hill, opposite the fortifications of Saint-Hippolyte Hill. It is privately owned and inhabited and can never be visited, including during the European Heritage Days. Only a few remains of the medieval castle have survived, including the southern and western walls, the castle chapel and a round tower.
Church
The Church of Saint John the Baptist was built from the 14th century onwards and houses a collection of Augustinian murals described as unique in France. It is also home to the oldest organ in the Isère département; it was reinstalled in 1791.
Paths
The Voie Verte from Crémieu to Arandon-Passins is a route designed for cycling and walking, with 18 developed kilometres and a connection to the ViaRhôna in the Arandon-Passins area. The Voie Verte des Balcons du Dauphiné runs along the former railway line of the East Lyonnais railway. It is heavily shaded and therefore pleasant even in very hot weather.
Market
The Crémieu market takes place every Wednesday morning in the medieval market hall.
