Commemoration
The Delville Wood Cemetery is the final resting place of 160 South Africans, including eight who served in imperial units.
Sixty-five South African burials at Delville Wood Cemetery have not been identified by name.
The Delville Wood Commemorative Museum was built around the Cross of Consecration. The museum at Delville Wood enables visitors to learn more about South Africa’s involvement in the major conflicts of the 20th century.
Visitors to Delville Wood should remain on the paths, as many unexploded shells are still present there.
Memorial Sites
The nearby Caterpillar Valley Cemetery contains 125 graves of New Zealand soldiers. The New Zealand National Memorial was erected at the site designated as the final objective of the New Zealand Division during the First Battle of the Somme, from 1 July to 18 November 1916.
The military cemetery opposite the South African Memorial in Longueval contains 5,523 soldiers’ graves, 3,593 of them unidentified.
The Indian Memorial in Longueval commemorates the involvement and sacrifice of Indian troops in the service of the British Empire. It stands on a hill opposite the Bois des Fourcaux.
The South African Memorial and the Commonwealth cemetery in Longueval are recognised as World Heritage Sites.
Routes
The 58-kilometre cycling route Les chemins de la grande Guerre dans la Somme (Boucle A) passes through the First World War battlefields along the Somme.
The Circuit du Souvenir passes through Longueval and then continues towards Albert.
Culture
A commemorative event is held in Longueval every year around Anzac Day.
