Somme: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
The Somme combines coastal landscapes, wetlands, waterways and cultural history. Anyone wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Somme can then continue searching for accommodation.
Nature and landscape
The Réserve Naturelle Nationale de la Baie de Somme is nationally significant for breeding and overwintering waterbirds. Its notable habitats include dune landscapes, salt marshes and grassland. The Baie de Somme also has the largest seal population in France.
The Baie de Somme Grand Site presents a mosaic of landscapes ranging from low-lying fields to cliffs, dunes and gravel ridges. The Hortillonnages extend over 265 hectares of canals, bodies of water and various gardens. From Amiens city centre, they can be reached via more than three kilometres of towpath with information boards.
Samara encompasses a wetland area of more than five hectares, whose ecosystem supports rare and protected species. Samara uses reconstructed habitats for its archaeological presentation.
Culture and history
Amiens Cathedral is one of the largest churches in France and one of the most complete Gothic churches of the 13th century. It was built mainly between 1220 and 1288 and recognised by UNESCO as a masterpiece of Gothic architecture.
In Amiens’ Saint-Leu district, canals, small bridges and colourful houses combine with the heritage of medieval water-powered mills. The Maison de Jules Verne in Amiens is open to the public; Jules Verne lived there as a tenant from 1882 to 1900.
The Historial de la Grande Guerre in Péronne presents the First World War from cultural, social and military perspectives. Samara uses reconstructed habitats as part of its archaeological interpretation.
Getting around and outdoor activities
The Circuit de la Canardière is an eleven-kilometre hiking trail between Amiens and Longueau. The Véloroute Vallée de Somme is a 160-kilometre cycle route from Ham to Saint-Valery-sur-Somme that mostly follows the river.
The Baie de Somme has 77 kilometres of cycling infrastructure and nine discovery loops. There is also a steam railway with four stations, as well as SNCF connections in Noyelles-sur-Mer and Rue.
The Parc du Marquenterre is accessible to visitors via discovery trails, information boards, observation posts and nature guides. The Maison de la Baie de Somme offers interactive tools for discovering the area, while nature guides offer trips into the bay, workshops and activities. The Marais des Bœufs has areas for picnics, playing and fishing.
Cuisine
The Somme’s culinary experiences include salicornia, gâteau battu, pâté de canard d’Amiens and baked leek tart. Ficelle picarde originated in Amiens in the 1950s. The chef Marcel Lefèvre created it at the Hotoie exhibition fair.
