Hangest-En-Santerre: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

The Église Saint-Martin was rebuilt between 1927 and 1931 on the site of a medieval church that had been partially damaged during the First World War. Its design is Romanesque-Byzantine; the central floor plan follows the shape of a Greek cross. The church also features a dome resting on pendentives and a bell tower.

The Église Saint-Martin can be visited by prior request at the town hall.

Culture

The war memorial in Hangest-en-Santerre commemorates the wars of 1914–1918 and 1939–1945. The sculpted group “Veuve et orphelin” depicts a war widow presenting her deceased husband's helmet to her son; the child decorates it with a laurel branch. The memorial was erected in 1923 and is made of Lavoux stone. The sculpted group is displayed on the front, while the names of the fallen are listed on the back.

The former B. Demoreuil fils hosiery factory is also part of the town's history. It was destroyed during the First World War, rebuilt in the late first quarter of the 20th century, and later operated under the names Bonneterie d'Hangest and Tricotage d'Hangest.

Traditions

Balle à la main de Hangest-en-Santerre is considered the most direct legacy of the Jeu de paume practised in the Middle Ages. The game is played bare-handed on a 65-metre-long and 12-metre-wide court made of earth, compacted chalk or asphalt.

Hiking

Le Chemin de Fresnoy is an easy 6.4 km circular hiking trail starting at 23 rue du Quesnel in Hangest-en-Santerre. The trail has 22 metres of positive elevation gain and runs at elevations between 99 and 108 metres.

The “Balade Santé” hiking route in Hangest-en-Santerre is 3.4 km long.

Cycling

The Circuit des 3 Doms (Boucle A) runs along the D54 through Hangest-en-Santerre.
