History and culture
The Brighton-les-Pins lighthouse is considered a symbolic landmark of Cayeux-sur-Mer. It was rebuilt in 1951 after being destroyed by the German army in 1944. The lighthouse stands on the site of an earlier fixed light, a coal fire built in 1770 under Louis XV.
Near the Brighton-les-Pins lighthouse, a larger group of bunkers and other remnants of the Atlantic Wall from the Second World War can be seen. The bunker remains at Brighton-les-Pins are located in a nature area subject to a biotope protection order. Guided tours of the bunker remains are regularly organised by the Maison de la Baie in cooperation with the town, the Syndicat mixte Baie de Somme and the Rando-Nature association.
The Chapelle des Marins was built in 1859 through a fundraising campaign by local seafarers and with financial support from donor families. Its carved wooden tympanum depicts the Virgin Mary arriving by boat in the port of Boulogne-sur-Mer. The Chapelle des Marins is open daily for prayer and visits.
Nature
More than 270 species of migratory birds have been recorded in the Hâble d’Ault ornithological reserve since the end of the 19th century. A signposted hiking trail has been established there to explore the area.
Getting around
The Cayeux-sur-Mer Vélorail uses the former departmental railway line “Réseau des Bains de Mer”. From Cayeux-sur-Mer, it offers return trips to the Hurt stop and Lanchères station. The journey by tourist train through the bas-champs takes around 30 minutes.
