The Hortillonnages form a mosaic of canals, bodies of water of varying sizes, vegetable crops, allotments, ornamental gardens, wooded areas and wetlands.
The Hortillonnages have been listed in the French inventory of natural monuments and sites since 1972.
The Hortillonnages are accessible from Amiens city centre; from the Chemin de halage, they can be visited along more than 3 kilometres starting at the bridge on Boulevard de Beauvillé.
