Viels-Maisons: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

The Église Sainte-Croix in Viels-Maisons is protected as a historic monument: the portal of the nave was listed as a historic monument on 5 June 1928, and the entire church on 11 June 2024. It is dedicated to the Holy Cross and houses a relic of the Cross.

Culture and history

The oldest choir of the Église Sainte-Croix preserves an earlier pointed barrel vault resting on small columns. Its construction can be dated to the first half of the reign of Louis VI, around 1080.

In the 16th century, a branch of the de Châtillon family built a château in Viels-Maisons with a two-storey square tower, a more slender octagonal tower, two lower wings, moats and a fortified wall. Viels-Maisons was also an important post station. On 21 June 1791, the carriage of Louis XVI stopped there to change horses.

Nature

Les Jardins de Viels-Maisons were created in 1991 by Bertrande de Ladoucette on the site of a French kitchen garden that was already recorded in a cadastral or feudal register from 1789. The park is designed in the French style, includes three large 1-km-long vistas and preserves the layout from the 17th century.

Events

The annual Viels-Maisons brocante takes place on the second Sunday in March and has been held since the beginning of the 1980s. On Sunday, 4 October 2026, Le Mille Pattes will also organise an outdoor event in Viels-Maisons featuring a 7-km hike and an 18-km route that can be completed as a hike, trail run or canicross with a dog.
