Aisne: Holiday apartments and holiday homes
Aisne combines green countryside, forests, preserved open spaces and traditional know-how. Anyone wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Aisne can then continue their accommodation search.
Nature
More than 200 natural areas in Aisne have been awarded the Espaces Naturels Sensibles label. In Thiérache, the hedges of the bocage protect cattle and pastures. Bois Hariez in the Forêt de Retz is an example of an integral biological reserve managed by the ONF. The Hottée du Diable woodland contains sandstone blocks that visitors can climb.
On foot, by bike and on horseback
Aisne has more than 200 signposted hiking trails. The hiking portal also lists circular routes that are accessible to people with reduced mobility and carry the Tourisme & Handicap label. The route options include mountain biking, road cycling, Véloroutes and Voies vertes. Horse-riding trails are signposted and maintained according to FFE standards; carriage drivers are also welcome.
A cycling stay from Château-Thierry takes you through the vineyards of Champagne and includes a visit to a local producer’s cellar.
Culture and history
The virtual Chemin-des-Dames Memorial supports collaborative indexing and the submission of photographs, letters and notebooks. The Caverne du Dragon museum opened to the public in 1999, and the visitor centre at the Chemin des Dames was added in 2019.
Admission to the visitor centre at the Chemin des Dames is free; it features interactive screens, archive images, eyewitness accounts and display cases. Visits to the Caverne du Dragon are exclusively guided; tickets are available online or on site. The visitor centre regularly presents temporary exhibitions about the Chemin des Dames and the First World War.
In nearby Laon, the Porte d’Ardon can be crossed on foot or by vehicle to reach the southern ramparts or the cathedral forecourt.
Food and wine
Maroilles is an AOP soft cheese made from fermented cow’s milk, produced partly in Nord and in Aisne. The cheese is square-shaped and comes in three smaller formats: Sorbais, Mignon and Quart. The production, processing and ageing of Maroilles take place exclusively in Thiérache in Nord and Aisne.
Winemakers in the south of Aisne welcome visitors for tastings in their cellars. The Champagne tourist route is a visitor route through the Aisne wine-growing region; in the Omois wine-growing area, it runs for almost 50 kilometres between Trélou-sur-Marne and Crouttes-sur-Marne.
Getting there
Château-Thierry can be reached by direct train from Paris’s Gare de l’Est station. Aisne is promoted as being one hour from Paris, less than two hours from Lille and 30 minutes from Reims.
