Veuilly-La-Poterie: Holiday Apartments and Houses

The Église de Veuilly-la-Poterie was classified as a historic monument by decree of 18 November 1919. Its archaeological significance is reflected, among other things, in precious 12th-century capitals and a bell tower dating from the late 12th century.

Inside, there are old wood panellings, a confessional of rare craftsmanship, and a polychrome statue of the Virgin and Child. The present-day Château dates from 1831.

During the war, the farm adjoining the Château regularly served as a relay station for troops heading to or returning from the front farther north. In the upper part of the village, there is also the last of the traditional pottery kilns that gave Veuilly-la-Poterie its name.

Culture

The machinery at Le Moulin extends over four floors up into the attic spaces. Until a few years ago, the historic milling operation at Le Moulin supplied the bakeries in the surrounding area.

Le Moulin still has a lock system that once diverted excess water from the Clignon into a millrace running around the mill building.

Landscape

The Le Clignon river flows through a marshland characterized by newly created ponds and regularly managed poplar plantations.

Getting Around

A 26-kilometre hiking stage leads from Veuilly-la-Poterie to La Ferté-Milon and is marked in yellow and brown.

The A4 motorway on the Paris–Reims–Strasbourg route can be reached via junction no. 20, “Château-Thierry,” 17 kilometres to the east, or via junction no. 19, “Montreuil-aux-Lions,” 13 kilometres to the south.

The nearest railway stations are in Crouy-sur-Ourcq, 15 kilometres to the west, and in Nanteuil–Sâacy-sur-Marne, 15 kilometres to the south. Both provide access to the Transilien network at the “Île-de-France” fare.
