Vauxcéré: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

One variant of the La Belle-Aumône route leads to the village of Vauxcéré. This same variant passes through Vauxcéré, a troglodytic village in a gorge with a church and washhouse. In Vauxcéré, houses are built against caves.

Culture

In Vauxcéré, on Rue de l’Eglise, stands the parish church Église paroissiale de la Nativité de la Vierge. It was built at the end of the 12th or in the 13th century. Its bell tower was rebuilt in 1788 by the building contractor Jean-Baptiste Mulette from Fismes.

The church was severely damaged during the retreat of the German troops in late summer 1918 and was restored from 1924 to 1931. It presumably lost its side aisles and the southern arm of the transept as a result of damage during the Hundred Years’ War or the Wars of Religion. Since this restoration, a bell gable has replaced the former crossing tower.

Nature

At the church of Vauxcéré, the route continues along a paved path. On the section of this route through Vauxcéré, there is a panoramic view over the Aisne valley and the Chemin des Dames plateau. In very clear weather, the cathedrals of Soissons, Reims and Laon can be seen from its viewpoint.
