Culture and History
The Church of Saint-Martin in Toulis-et-Attencourt was built in the 11th century. Its history is linked to Hildegaud, Pope Benedict VIII and Rozoy Abbey: Benedict VIII received the church from Hildegaud and handed it over to the abbey.
In the area around Toulis-et-Attencourt, the Musée des Temps Barbares in Marle is an on-site museum dedicated to the Merovingian period. The visitor route there traces the history of excavations at a cemetery and settlements and presents the so-called Migration Period, or “barbarian” era. The archaeological park of the Musée des Temps Barbares in Marle presents life-size reconstructions of Merovingian settlements to the public.
Nature
In the area around Toulis-et-Attencourt, the Marais de Vesles-et-Caumont was designated a national nature reserve in 1997, covering an area of 108 hectares. It is home to more than 130 bird species, including grasshopper warblers, bluethroats, marsh harriers and hen harriers as breeding birds, as well as common snipes, which frequently stop there during migration.
Regular guided tours for the public are offered in the Marais de Vesles-et-Caumont nature reserve; group events are possible on request. In the area around Toulis-et-Attencourt, a path at the Grand marais de Liesse allows visitors to explore the wetlands in peace. Access to the Grand marais de Liesse is via the Sentier du grand marais behind the nursing home in Liesse-Notre-Dame.
In the area around Toulis-et-Attencourt, the Grand marais de Liesse is part of the Marais de la Souche and includes a peat bog and woodland areas where numerous protected plant and animal species can be found.
