Pontavert was completely destroyed in the First World War; in 1921, the municipality joined a reconstruction cooperative. Anyone considering Pontavert as a travel destination will want to find or rent a holiday apartment.
Culture and History
The present-day Church of Saint Médard was consecrated on 3 May 1931, after the previous building had been destroyed in March 1918. It has an elongated floor plan, a projecting transept, a structure built entirely of dressed stone, and a vaulted choir. The design for the rebuilt Church of Saint Médard was created by the architect Drouin-Deligne.
The Pontavert war memorial was inaugurated on 3 October 1926. Its central relief depicts a helmeted figure of Victory in half-relief, a winged figure, a laurel wreath, and the inscription “PAX”; a rooster is shown in the background. The memorial was later supplemented with a marble plaque commemorating the victims of the Second World War.
The name Pontavert is connected with the bridge over the Aisne, and the settlement has been documented in writing since the 9th century. The rubble from the village, which was dismantled after the war, was used to raise the lower-lying land near the river and protect the houses from flooding by the Aisne.
The Pontavert cemetery, also known as Beaurepaire, was established in 1915 and expanded between 1919 and 1925. It contains a total of 6,815 bodies, predominantly French, as well as some British and Russian soldiers. The cemetery also contains a monument commemorating the fallen soldiers of the 31st Infantry Regiment who died during the 1917 Nivelle Offensive while attacking Bois des Buttes.
Landscape and Trails
The Notre Dame des Epis stele is located on the Route de Corbény at the place called Thony. The Beaumarais memorial on the Route de Craonnelle commemorates the 36th Infantry Regiment. A bridge over the Aisne is located at the southern entrance to Pontavert on the Route de Roucy.
There is wooded undergrowth along the ru de Beaurepaire. The Beaurepaire stream flows into the Aisne. The municipal tourism information also refers to hiking trails where the landscapes of Pontavert can be explored.
