Moulins has been documented as a village since the 10th century. Since 1136, the place has been recorded under the names Villa Molini and Molendinis.
Culture and history
The history of Moulins is also reflected in its mills: Moulin Caillet was historically used for cutting wood, while Moulin Budet was historically used for grinding chicory.
Moulins owed part of its prosperity to winegrowing. There were once several Vendangeoirs (grape-harvesting houses) here; no traces of them remain today.
The construction of fortification walls in Moulins was approved by Louis VII (1120–1180).
Military history
After the fighting in the First World War ended, Moulins was completely destroyed; reconstruction took place from 1920 to 1930.
On 15 April 1917, the regiment crossed the bridges over the Aisne to occupy the Moulins–Paissy–Cuissy et Geny area and capture the Ailles sector on 16 April as part of the major Nivelle Offensive.
Nature
The Creuttes de Moulins are a refuge for numerous bat species. One of the largest colonies of greater horseshoe bats hibernates and reproduces in the Creuttes de Moulins.
